Ya'll know the name! Possibly the best-known winemaker in McLaren Vale flexing his muscles here. Powerful and grippy yet smooth and subtle in so many ways. Geoff created this wine as a love letter to McLaren Vale and it's a fantastic read!

Why do we love this wine?

There's a bit of a story to this one. Before Geoff Merrill purchased his winery, it was simply known as 'Mount Hurtle' , this is how he explains the decision, "When I purchased the Mount Hurtle winery in 1985 it was to preserve a small piece of Australia’s winemaking history", that brings us to this wine. This wine is that throwback, this wine is that small piece of winemaking history. Exceedingly smooth, age has softened and rounded this beauty whilst maintaining a wonderful acid line and grippy tannins - it's classic Geoff Merrill, classic McLaren Vale, it's just a classic Australian shiraz.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Mount Hurtle label represents Geoff Merrill's tribute to Australian winemaking history, preserving the original name of the winery he purchased in 1985. This wine embodies traditional McLaren Vale shiraz-making techniques with a focus on expressing the terroir that made this site historically significant. It's crafted as a throwback style that honours the heritage of one of South Australia's most respected wine regions.

The 2017 vintage has beautifully evolved, with age softening and rounding the wine's structure while preserving its essential character. The tannins have become more integrated and grippy rather than harsh, whilst the natural acidity provides excellent backbone for continued ageing. This development showcases how quality McLaren Vale shiraz can transform from powerful youth into elegant maturity whilst maintaining its distinctive regional personality.

The wine's cedar, chocolate, and clove flavours make it ideal for rich, savoury dishes that can match its intensity. Think slow-cooked lamb with rosemary, aged beef steaks, or game meats where the wine's grippy tannins can cut through fat whilst the spice notes complement herbs and marinades. The chocolate undertones also make it surprisingly good with dark chocolate desserts or strong aged cheeses.

The impressive ratings, including 94 points from Wine Orbit and recognition as a 'Killer Vintage', reflect the wine's exceptional balance of power and finesse. Critics appreciate how it captures the essence of McLaren Vale's warm climate shiraz whilst showing restraint and elegance. The wine demonstrates Geoff Merrill's decades of experience in crafting wines that are both immediately appealing and built for long-term cellaring.

Given its full-bodied structure, excellent acidity, and grippy tannins, this wine has the framework for extended cellaring well into the 2030s. McLaren Vale shiraz from quality producers like Geoff Merrill typically peak between 8-15 years from vintage, meaning this 2017 is entering its optimal drinking window now but will continue developing complexity. The wine's traditional style and proven track record suggest it will reward patient collectors with increased depth and integration over time.
