Ya'll know the name! Possibly the best-known winemaker in McLaren Vale flexing his muscles here. Powerful and grippy yet smooth and subtle in so many ways. Geoff created this wine as a love letter to McLaren Vale and it's a fantastic read!

Why do we love this wine?

There's a bit of a story to this one. Before Geoff Merrill purchased his winery, it was simply known as 'Mount Hurtle' , this is how he explains the decision, "When I purchased the Mount Hurtle winery in 1985 it was to preserve a small piece of Australia’s winemaking history", that brings us to this wine. This wine is that throwback, this wine is that small piece of winemaking history. Exceedingly smooth, age has softened and rounded this beauty whilst maintaining a wonderful acid line and grippy tannins - it's classic Geoff Merrill, classic McLaren Vale, it's just a classic Australian shiraz.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Mount Hurtle label represents Geoff Merrill's tribute to Australian winemaking heritage, preserving the original winery name from before his 1985 purchase. This wine embodies traditional McLaren Vale shiraz characteristics with the benefit of bottle age - the 2017 vintage has developed beautifully, allowing the grippy tannins to soften while maintaining structural integrity. It's essentially Geoff's homage to classic Australian shiraz-making traditions.

At seven years of age, this shiraz has reached an ideal drinking window where bottle maturation has worked its magic. The initially robust tannins have mellowed and integrated, creating a smoother, more rounded palate while preserving the wine's essential acid backbone. The cedar, chocolate, and clove flavours have likely become more harmonious and complex, showcasing how quality McLaren Vale shiraz evolves gracefully with proper cellaring.

The rich, full-bodied profile with cedar and chocolate notes makes this shiraz perfect for hearty red meat dishes like grilled lamb, beef roasts, or barbecued steaks. The wine's grippy tannins and spice elements complement dishes with robust flavours - think slow-cooked beef with herbs, aged cheeses, or even dark chocolate desserts. McLaren Vale shiraz traditionally pairs beautifully with Australia's outdoor cooking culture and bold, flavourful cuisine.

The impressive 94-point Wine Orbit rating and five-star recognition reflect both the exceptional 2017 vintage conditions and Geoff Merrill's winemaking expertise in McLaren Vale. The combination of ideal terroir, skilled viticulture, and proper aging has created a wine that balances power with elegance. Critics particularly value wines that demonstrate regional typicity while showing complexity and aging potential - qualities this Mount Hurtle shiraz delivers in abundance.

This 2017 shiraz is drinking beautifully now, having reached that sweet spot where youthful power meets mature complexity. The description of 'exceedingly smooth' wine with 'softened and rounded' character suggests it's at peak drinking condition. However, quality McLaren Vale shiraz can continue developing for another 5-8 years, so you could enjoy it immediately or cellar it for further evolution of those cedar and spice characteristics.
