Why do we love this wine?

There would likely be few people who haven’t heard the Hardy name around, with a legacy going all the way back to the 1850s with the planting of some of South Australia’s first vines. So, when it comes to Geoff Hardy, great-great grandson of Thomas Hardy, it’s fair to say that skill and passion for the wine industry run in his blood. I sat with Geoff to taste this wine amidst the autumn leaves falling from the trees into the lake at his Kuitpo winery, and there was a resonance with this label itself. The wine was impressive, although Geoff’s humble attitude wouldn’t let you know that. It’s hard to put a price on a wine like this, and it’ll be the last thing you’re thinking about when you pour out the last drops from the bottle.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine represents five generations of Hardy family winemaking expertise, with Geoff Hardy being the great-great grandson of Thomas Hardy who planted some of South Australia's first vines in the 1850s. McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and diverse soils create ideal conditions for Shiraz, producing wines with concentrated flavours and elegant structure. The region's proximity to the ocean moderates temperatures, allowing for extended ripening periods that develop complex flavour profiles while maintaining natural acidity.

Serve this wine at 16-18°C to showcase its rich plum and liquorice flavours alongside subtle vanilla notes from oak aging. The full-bodied structure makes it perfect for hearty dishes like grilled lamb, beef roasts, or aged cheeses. Decanting for 30-60 minutes before serving will help soften the tannins and allow the complex aromatics to fully develop, enhancing your tasting experience.

The 2020 vintage in McLaren Vale was characterised by excellent growing conditions with warm, dry weather that concentrated flavours while maintaining good acidity levels. This vintage produced Shiraz with exceptional colour density and flavour intensity, making it ideal for both current enjoyment and cellaring. The wine's 90-point ratings across multiple categories reflect the vintage's success and Geoff Hardy's skilled winemaking approach.

This full-bodied McLaren Vale Shiraz has excellent aging potential due to its concentrated fruit flavours, balanced tannin structure, and quality oak integration. You can expect it to develop beautifully over 8-12 years, with the wine showing optimal drinking from now through 2032. During cellaring, the liquorice and vanilla notes will integrate further while developing secondary characteristics like leather, tobacco, and earthy complexity.

Geoff Hardy represents the perfect blend of historical legacy and modern innovation, carrying forward 170 years of family winemaking tradition while applying contemporary techniques. His boutique approach focuses on small-batch, handcrafted wines that express the unique terroir of his vineyard sites. The multiple 90-point ratings and recognition as both an icon and favourite producer reflect his commitment to quality over quantity, creating wines that showcase the true character of McLaren Vale Shiraz.
