Blood plum, sour cherry, mulberries and a hint of raw and rich chocolate make this sangiovese as smooth as it is intense and rich as it is complex , while remaining nothing short of vibrant in the glass.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Famed for its Cambrian soil and sensational grape-growing conditions, Heathcote is earning a rep as more than just the home of lip-smackingly good shiraz, but pretty astonishing sangiovese, too. And from the very first sip this Limited Release will tell you precisely why. With depth, poise and balance plus a bouquet of wild berries, anise spice and bitter chocolate that sings, it flows along the palate to finish with savoury tannins. To add to the charm, this wine spent 18 months of maturation before release to enhance the palate and fuel the richness. Plenty of years left in the tank while being ripe and ready for ageing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Heathcote's ancient Cambrian soils and warm continental climate create sangiovese with more concentrated fruit flavours and softer tannins than traditional Tuscan expressions. The region's unique terroir allows the grape to ripen fully while retaining its characteristic savoury edge, resulting in wines that bridge Old World elegance with New World fruit intensity. This particular wine showcases how Australian sangiovese can develop complexity through extended maturation while maintaining the variety's signature cherry and spice profile.

With 18 months of pre-release maturation already completed, this sangiovese is drinking beautifully now but has excellent cellaring potential for 5-8 years. Sangiovese typically develops tertiary flavours of leather, tobacco, and dried herbs with age, while the savoury tannins will soften and integrate further. The wine's medium body and balanced structure suggest it will reward patient collectors who want to experience how the wild berry and chocolate notes evolve into more complex, earthy characteristics.

The wine's savoury tannins and anise spice make it perfect for Italian cuisine, particularly dishes with tomato-based sauces, aged cheeses, and cured meats. The bitter chocolate notes complement grilled lamb or beef, while the cherry fruit balances rich, herb-crusted dishes. Medium-bodied sangiovese like this also pairs beautifully with mushroom risotto or roasted vegetables, as the wine's earthy undertones enhance umami flavours without overwhelming delicate ingredients.

Extended maturation allows sangiovese's naturally high acidity and firm tannins to integrate and soften, creating better balance and mouthfeel. This timeframe is optimal for developing the wine's complexity without masking its fruit character - shorter maturation would leave the tannins too aggressive, while longer aging might diminish the vibrant berry flavours. The process also allows the anise and chocolate notes to emerge naturally, creating the layered profile that makes this a 'Limited Release' rather than a standard bottling.

While Heathcote is renowned for powerful shiraz, this sangiovese offers a more elegant, food-friendly alternative with brighter acidity and more restrained alcohol levels. Unlike the region's bold shiraz expressions, sangiovese maintains finesse and structure, making it more versatile at the dinner table. The variety's natural affinity for Heathcote's iron-rich soils produces wines with distinctive mineral undertones and spice complexity that complement rather than compete with the region's flagship variety.
