Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

This has all the playfulness and bright, snappy acidity we love from barbera, with high-tone red and purple fruit leading and elevating the wine. Cherry and plum at the fore, with a bit of leather and spice rounding out the aromatic profile. Juicy and jubey, fresh and energetic. Completely unfussy and easy-going mid-week red. If ever there was a wine to pair with takeaway pizza, this is it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Barbera is renowned for its naturally high acidity and bright, food-friendly character, which sets it apart from heavier Italian reds like Barolo or Chianti. This Gapsted expression showcases these classic traits beautifully, with snappy acidity that keeps the wine fresh and energetic. The variety's ability to maintain vibrancy while delivering juicy fruit flavours makes it incredibly versatile at the dinner table.

King Valley's cool climate and elevation create perfect conditions for Barbera to retain its signature bright acidity while developing complex flavours. The region's Italian heritage, established by migrant families in the mid-20th century, means there's deep understanding of how to coax the best from this variety. The valley's diurnal temperature variation helps preserve the fresh, energetic character that makes this wine so appealing.

The wine's bright acidity and medium body make it exceptional with tomato-based dishes, which is why it's perfect with takeaway pizza as mentioned. The cherry and plum flavours complement Italian cuisine beautifully, while the spice notes work wonderfully with charcuterie and aged cheeses. Its unfussy nature means it's equally at home with casual weeknight meals or more sophisticated fare.

Serve this wine slightly chilled at around 16-18°C to enhance its fresh, energetic character and bright acidity. The 2021 vintage is drinking beautifully now and will continue to develop over the next 2-3 years if stored properly in a cool, dark place. Its approachable style means it doesn't require decanting, making it perfect for spontaneous mid-week enjoyment.

Limited Release indicates this is a special small-batch wine that showcases Gapsted's winemaking expertise with this particular variety and vintage. These wines often represent the best parcels of fruit or experimental winemaking techniques that wouldn't be possible in larger production runs. The limited nature means once it's gone, you'll need to wait for the next vintage to experience this specific expression of King Valley Barbera.
