Why do we love this wine?

Time to break out that pasta recipe you've been thinking of making for months. A beautifully perfumed bouquet of plums and dark cherries meets the nose and promises even more on the palate, and it delivers. Rich black fruits, spicy liquorice notes and a touch of dark chocolate balance a pleasantly firm tannic structure and energetic acid. There's more than a little to think about here and it's very possible you'll need some good company and a second glass, or bottle, to really get to the bottom of this beauty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Nizza DOCG represents the pinnacle of Barbera production in Piedmont, requiring grapes from specific hillside vineyards and stricter winemaking standards than regular Barbera d'Asti or d'Alba. This designation was only granted in 2014, recognising the exceptional quality potential of Barbera grown in the historic Nizza commune. The result is typically more concentrated, age-worthy wines with greater complexity and structure, as evidenced by this wine's firm tannins and layered fruit profile.

Serve this medium-bodied Barbera slightly below room temperature (16-18°C) to highlight its fresh acidity and fruit character. The wine's natural high acidity makes it exceptional with tomato-based dishes, aged cheeses, and rich pasta sauces - particularly those with mushrooms or meat. Its spicy liquorice notes and dark chocolate undertones also complement grilled meats and charcuterie beautifully.

This 2020 Nizza DOCG is drinking beautifully now, showing excellent integration of its fruit, tannins, and acidity. However, Barbera from prestigious sites like Nizza often develops additional complexity with 3-5 years of cellaring, allowing the firm tannic structure to soften while secondary flavours emerge. The wine's energetic acid backbone suggests it will age gracefully, potentially developing more earthy and savoury characteristics over time.

A 4.0 Vivino rating places this wine in the 'very good' category, representing the top 10% of wines on the platform based on thousands of consumer reviews. This rating, combined with its Staff Pick designation, indicates consistent quality and broad appeal among both wine professionals and enthusiasts. For a Barbera at this level, it suggests excellent value and reliable drinking pleasure.

Piedmont's unique combination of continental climate, calcareous clay soils, and optimal hillside exposures creates ideal conditions for Barbera's naturally high acidity to be balanced by concentrated fruit flavours. The region's winemaking heritage, particularly around Alba and Asti, has refined Barbera production over centuries, with modern techniques now producing wines that rival the region's more famous Nebbiolo. This Frasca bottling exemplifies how contemporary Piedmontese producers are elevating Barbera to new heights of sophistication.
