Bursting with ripe cherries, plums and a distinct fresh raspberry acidity. A surprisingly long finish and a lovely little lick of tannin. Italian wine purists would cringe if you chilled this one down a bit, but we won't tell - enjoy yourself.

Why do we love this wine?

DOCG. This is the good stuff, certified, bona-fide, authentic barbera. Softly pressed, lengthily macerated and sat to rest for just the right amount of time. You can feel the love in this wine, everything is in its right place. The vibrant acidity and plush fruit work in tandem to create a thoroughly enjoyable drinking experience and a wine that will age and develop over the next 5 years (at least).

Frequently Asked Questions

The DOCG designation represents Italy's highest quality classification, meaning this Barbera meets the strictest production standards and undergoes rigorous testing. Unlike DOC or IGT wines, DOCG wines must be bottled in their region of origin and carry a government guarantee seal. This certification ensures you're getting authentic Barbera d'Asti made from grapes grown in the specific hillside vineyards of Asti, where the variety reaches its most refined expression.

While this Barbera is delicious now, it's built for development over the next 5+ years thanks to its vibrant acidity and structured tannins. Barbera's high natural acidity acts as a preservative, allowing the cherry and plum flavours to evolve into more complex notes of leather, tobacco, and dried herbs. The wine's medium body and balanced fruit will gradually integrate, creating a more sophisticated drinking experience if you can resist opening it immediately.

This medium-bodied Barbera is perfectly suited to Piedmont's rich cuisine - think truffle pasta, brasato al Barolo, or aged cheeses like Gorgonzola. The wine's bright acidity cuts through fatty dishes beautifully, while its cherry and plum notes complement tomato-based sauces and grilled meats. It's also excellent with charcuterie boards featuring salami and prosciutto, as the acidity cleanses the palate between rich, salty bites.

The 90-point scores from both Vivino and Killer Vintage reflect the exceptional quality achieved through careful winemaking - lengthy maceration extracts optimal colour and flavour, while controlled pressing preserves the grape's natural elegance. Barbera d'Asti represents some of Italy's best value in premium wine, offering complexity typically found in much more expensive bottles. The 2021 vintage particularly benefited from ideal growing conditions in Piedmont.

Unlike the powerful tannins of Nebbiolo or the rustic earthiness of Sangiovese, Barbera offers immediate approachability with its soft, plush fruit character and bright acidity. It's less structured than Barolo but more refined than basic Chianti, making it perfect for both casual dinners and special occasions. Barbera's naturally low tannins mean it doesn't require extensive ageing to be enjoyable, though quality examples like this DOCG will reward patience.
