Coonawarra is cabernet country. Everyone knows that. Right? Or at least we think we do... But when Wynns turns their attention to shiraz - specifically, the perfectly-ripening fruit from the ancient vines along V&A Lane - something genuinely exciting happens. And Coonawarra cabernets start shaking in their boots...

Why do we love this wine?

This is not your typical full-throttle Australian shiraz. That's entirely the point. Early harvested, whole bunch included, wild fermented and matured in larger oak - every decision made to preserve freshness, brightness and a lifted, food-friendly elegance that puts this wine in a completely different conversation. The nose is immediately captivating - roasted strawberry, magnolia blossom, fresh pastry and a cool-climate floral quality that feels effortlessly refined. The palate is bright and seamlessly structured, with cherry, blueberry and savoury spice elements rolling through very fine tannins and a long, peppery, biscuity finish that just keeps evolving in the glass.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine deliberately breaks the mould of powerful, high-alcohol Australian Shiraz through careful winemaking choices. Early harvesting preserves natural acidity, whole bunch inclusion adds structural complexity, and wild fermentation creates unique flavour compounds. The use of larger oak vessels allows the fruit to shine while adding subtle texture rather than dominant vanilla notes. These techniques create a wine that's more akin to elegant cool-climate styles, proving that Coonawarra can produce Shiraz with finesse rather than just power.

Coonawarra's famous terra rossa soil over limestone provides excellent drainage while retaining moisture, creating ideal conditions for slow, even ripening. The region's cool maritime climate allows grapes to develop complex flavours while maintaining natural acidity - crucial for the bright, food-friendly style Wynns has crafted here. This terroir naturally produces wines with structure and elegance, making it perfect for a more restrained approach to Shiraz that emphasises finesse over power.

The wine's bright acidity and fine tannin structure make it exceptionally versatile with food, particularly dishes that benefit from wine's ability to cut through richness. Think roasted lamb with herbs, duck breast with cherry sauce, or aged hard cheeses where the wine's savoury spice elements can complement complex flavours. The peppery finish and floral notes also pair beautifully with Mediterranean cuisine featuring rosemary, thyme, and black pepper.

The exceptional scores of 96 points from The Real Review and 95 points from Halliday Wine Companion indicate this wine has achieved something special in the Australian wine landscape. These ratings suggest the wine successfully balances power with elegance - a difficult achievement that critics particularly value. Wynns' 5 Red Star rating from Halliday confirms the producer's consistent ability to create wines that represent the pinnacle of their region's potential.

The description mentions the wine 'keeps evolving in the glass', indicating complex aromatics that unfold with aeration - a hallmark of well-made wine with good structure. The fine tannins and natural acidity suggest excellent cellaring potential, likely developing more savoury, earthy complexity over 8-12 years. As it ages, expect the bright fruit to integrate further with the spice elements, while the floral qualities may evolve into more complex tertiary aromas of leather, earth, and dried herbs.
