Who doesn’t love a little bit of low-yielding, full-bodied, South Australian cabernet? We know we do. Nobody does low-yielding, full-bodied, South Australian cabernet better than Pirramimma, and we'll go to the bank on that one.

Why do we love this wine?

Sourced from Pirramimma’s old cabernet vineyards in McLaren Vale, luscious blackberry, blueberry, mint and capsicum notes hum alongside cedar and toasted almond notes from time in oak. Secondary characters of black olive, tobacco and rosemary are starting to poke through as well. No need to rush though as this has another decade plus of development left in the bottle. For now or for the future, the choice is yours.

Ken Gargett

Ken Gargett

"While 2021 was a stunning vintage in McLaren Vale, 2022 is very much a match in terms of quality – feast on the riches while they exist! A maroon hue with edges of dark red, the nose offers us hints of truffles, cassis, blackberries, bay leaves, cigar box notes, and the influence of a little toasty oak, with nutmeg and spices. A linear style with good focus, the wine shows fine acidity, sleek tannins and is of medium length. We will see further improvement over the next eight to ten years." - Ken Gargett

"A generous and concentrated cabernet from this very good McLaren Vale vintage. Strikes immediately with a varietal burst of blackcurrant, but then other notes of bay leaf and red currant with a touch of tobacco leave start to lift. The palate is full-bodied but elegant and expressive. Controlled and structured with a focused long finish. Excellent wine. Cellar: 12 years" - Ray Jordan, Wine Pilot

Frequently Asked Questions

This Heritage Limited Edition represents Pirramimma's commitment to showcasing their finest old vine fruit from established McLaren Vale vineyards. The 'Heritage' designation typically indicates fruit sourced from mature vines that have developed deep root systems over decades, producing grapes with concentrated flavours and complexity. Limited editions like this are often produced in smaller quantities from the best parcels of fruit, making them collector-worthy expressions of the estate's winemaking philosophy.

This wine has exceptional cellaring potential with over a decade of development ahead of it. The 2022 vintage is already showing beautiful integration between fruit and oak, but the emerging secondary characters of black olive, tobacco and rosemary indicate it's just beginning its evolution. McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon from quality producers like Pirramimma typically peaks between 8-15 years, so you could enjoy it now for its vibrant fruit or cellar it until 2035 or beyond for maximum complexity.

The wine's rich blackberry and blueberry fruit, combined with cedar oak and emerging savoury notes, makes it perfect for robust dishes. Classic pairings include grilled or roasted red meats like lamb with rosemary or beef with herb crusts, which echo the wine's own herbal characteristics. The mint and capsicum notes also complement Mediterranean dishes, while the full-bodied structure can stand up to aged cheeses and charcuterie boards featuring cured meats and dark chocolate.

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and diverse soils create perfect conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, producing wines with both power and elegance. The region's warm days allow for full phenolic ripeness, developing the intense blackcurrant and chocolate flavours, while cool sea breezes from the nearby coast preserve natural acidity. The old vine vineyards that Pirramimma sources from have had decades to establish deep root systems in the region's ironstone and clay soils, contributing to the wine's complexity and distinctive regional character.

The interplay between primary fruit flavours and emerging savoury notes reflects both the wine's quality and its stage of development. The luscious blackberry and blueberry represent the wine's youth and varietal character, while the black olive, tobacco and rosemary notes indicate the beginning of tertiary development through bottle ageing. This complexity is enhanced by the oak treatment, which adds cedar and toasted almond notes, creating a layered wine that showcases both the immediate appeal of McLaren Vale fruit and the sophisticated evolution that quality Cabernet Sauvignon undergoes with time.
