Ripe, rich, dark and brooding - with just enough spice and herbaceousness to balance out perfectly. This is what we've come to expect from boutique, crafted MR cabs, and this drop certainly delivers!

Why do we love this wine?

Here is a perfect example of a Margs cabernet at its most classic. Just enough of a nod toward its origin in Bordeaux, but with plenty of Aussie character to fill it out. Ripe, dark mulberries and cassis are deliciously intertwined with a touch of smoky sweet oak spices and herbaceous capsicum on the nose. The palate is loaded with ripe dark fruits, and the excellently well integrated tannins carry the rich fruit through to a long, satisfying finish.

Wine Orbit

Wine Orbit

Gorgeously styled with power and elegance, showing blackcurrant, tobacco, cedary oak and warm spice aromas on the nose, followed by a wonderfully structured palate offering succulent fruit intensity with beautifully infused tannins. It's superbly structured and sturdy with an engaging finish. At its best: now to 2037

Garnet ruby in colour, this is an earthy, fleshy style. The nose exhibits notes of red fruits, tobacco leaves, graphite and spices. This is more broad than focused and linear with an intriguing touch of sour cherries emerging on the palate. A wine of mid-length with sleek tannins evident to enjoy over the next four to six years.

Frequently Asked Questions

While this wine nods to its Bordeaux heritage with classic structure and herbaceous capsicum notes, it showcases distinctly Australian character through riper, more generous dark fruit expression. Margaret River's maritime climate allows Cabernet Sauvignon to retain elegance while developing fuller, more approachable fruit flavours than traditional Bordeaux. The integration of smoky oak spices with mulberry and cassis creates a bridge between Old World restraint and New World exuberance.

The excellently integrated tannins in this 2020 vintage provide the structural backbone essential for long-term cellaring, while remaining approachable now. Well-managed tannins act as natural preservatives, allowing the wine to evolve gracefully over 10-15 years. As they soften with age, they'll reveal more complex secondary flavours while maintaining the wine's full-bodied character and ensuring that long, satisfying finish develops even greater depth.

This full-bodied Cabernet's savoury, textured profile makes it ideal for rich, protein-heavy dishes that can match its intensity. The blackcurrant and cocoa notes complement grilled red meats, while the minerally backbone cuts through fatty dishes like lamb shanks or aged beef. The herbaceous capsicum elements also pair beautifully with Mediterranean herbs in dishes like rosemary-crusted rack of lamb or herb-rubbed steaks.

The 95-point rating and Five Stars recognition reflect this wine's exceptional balance between power and finesse, showcasing Margaret River Cabernet at its peak expression. Wine Orbit likely recognised the seamless integration of ripe fruit, well-judged oak, and structured tannins that create complexity without overwhelming the palate. The wine demonstrates textbook regional character while maintaining individual personality, a combination that critics value highly in premium Australian Cabernet.

Gneissic refers to gneiss, a metamorphic rock type found in Margaret River's ancient geological foundations that significantly influences the region's terroir. This rock formation contributes to the wine's minerally characteristics and helps create the well-draining soils that stress vines appropriately, concentrating flavours. The reference to gneissic geology in the wine's name highlights Epic Negociants' focus on terroir expression, connecting the wine's mineral backbone directly to its vineyard origins.
