The SR806 is the most approachable wine in Eisenstone’s 2022 line-up, but still speaks clearly of its site and sub-region. This'll age beautifully, that's not in doubt, but unlike some of Eisenstone's other pieces - you can drink this one NOW!

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

From the creekside block of a revitalised Moppa vineyard, this is a full-on Barossa shiraz with depth and class. Dark cherry, mulberry and spice sit on a bright frame, with subtle earthy tones and oak in perfect balance. Classy, charming and ready to drink. It spent 20 months in French oak (half new), but the oak’s integrated, not showy. It’s all about dark cherry, mulberry and a flicker of savoury spice, with earthy tones and supple tannins rounding things out. The kind of wine that doesn’t need a decade to shine - but it’s got the bones to handle it if you want to wait.

Halliday Wine Companion

Halliday Wine Companion

Sourced from the Richardson vineyard on the border of Greenock and Moppa in the northwest of the Barossa, matured in French oak (50% new) for 20 months. Classic northern fruit density and oomphh here with deep blackberry, satsuma plum and black cherry fruits with a touch of boysenberry. Hints of clove, oak-derived wood spice, cedar, choc-mint, licorice, brandied fruits, eucalyptus and dark chocolate. The oak influence seems a little stronger here but that fruit is just lovely. The fine tannins melt away and the fruit purity is off the charts.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Shiraz comes from a specific creekside block in the revitalised Moppa vineyard, giving it a unique terroir expression. The proximity to water sources often creates microclimates that produce more elegant, balanced wines compared to the sometimes overpowering style Barossa is known for. The 20-month French oak maturation (half new) adds sophistication without overwhelming the fruit, creating a wine that showcases both power and finesse.

While this wine is ready to drink now and shows immediate charm, it has the structural backbone to age gracefully for up to a decade. The supple tannins and integrated oak suggest it will develop more complex secondary flavours over 5-8 years. However, given its current balance and accessibility, there's no need to wait - it's designed to be enjoyed at any stage of its evolution.

The wine's dark cherry and mulberry flavours with savoury spice notes make it perfect for rich, umami-driven dishes. Think slow-cooked lamb with rosemary, aged beef steaks, or even duck with cherry sauce. The earthy undertones also complement mushroom-based dishes beautifully, while the wine's structure can handle strong cheeses like aged cheddar or blue cheese.

The exceptional ratings (96pts from Wine Pilot, 95pts from both Halliday and The Real Review) reflect the wine's perfect balance of power and elegance. Critics particularly value wines that express their terroir clearly while maintaining drinkability, which this Shiraz achieves through its integrated oak and bright acidity framework. The old vine fruit source and single vineyard designation also add to its prestige and complexity.

Vineyard revitalisation typically involves replanting, improving soil health, and implementing modern viticulture practices while respecting the site's heritage. This process often results in more concentrated, expressive fruit as the vines establish themselves in optimised conditions. The creekside location suggests careful site selection for drainage and microclimate benefits, contributing to the wine's noted depth and class.
