Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

From one of the Barossa’s most prized addresses, this single-vineyard shiraz is all deep-set power, structure and purity. Violets, blueberry compote, cassis, dark chocolate and spice flood the glass, with fine tannins and serious length. Layers of spice, liquorice and black forest cake, all held together by silky tannins and a long, cassis-rich finish. It’s already brilliant, but will evolve gracefully through to 2040. One for the cellar - or the serious Barossa fan. Just 800 bottles made, and destined for greatness.

Halliday Wine Companion

Halliday Wine Companion

Shiraz sourced from the McDonald vineyard on Roennfeldt Road in the subregion of Marananga. Deep, saturated crimson with fruit characters of blackberry, cassis, macerated plum and blue fruits with layers of mixed spice, licorice, brandied fruits, cedar, tobacco, dark chocolate, blackforest cake and earth. The leitmotif with the Eisenstone wines is their fruit purity. It's a constant across the range and certainly is present here. Melt in the mouth tannins and a long cassis-rich draw with layers of spice as it fades.

Frequently Asked Questions

This is a single-vineyard Shiraz from Marananga, one of the Barossa's most prestigious sub-regions known for producing wines with exceptional power and elegance. The SV904 designation indicates it comes from a specific vineyard block, allowing for precise expression of terroir. With only 800 bottles produced and ratings consistently above 95 points from leading critics, it represents the pinnacle of Barossa Shiraz craftsmanship.

While this wine is already drinking beautifully, it's built for long-term cellaring and will evolve gracefully through to 2040. The combination of fine tannins, concentrated fruit, and structural backbone means it will develop additional complexity over the next 15-18 years. For those who enjoy the primary fruit flavours, drink it now, but patience will be rewarded with tertiary characters like leather, tobacco, and earthy nuances.

The wine's rich cassis and dark chocolate notes make it perfect for red meat dishes, particularly slow-cooked lamb shanks, beef brisket, or aged steaks. The liquorice and spice elements complement game meats like venison or duck, while the wine's structure can handle bold flavours like blue cheese or dark chocolate desserts. The silky tannins won't overpower the food, creating harmonious pairings.

The unanimous praise from critics like Andrea Pritzker MW (97pts) and James Halliday (96pts) reflects the wine's exceptional balance of power and finesse. Critics recognise the purity of fruit expression, the seamless integration of oak, and the wine's ability to showcase Marananga's unique terroir. The consistent scoring across multiple respected palates indicates this is a benchmark example of premium Barossa Shiraz.

Old vines, typically 30+ years old, produce smaller yields of more concentrated grapes due to their established root systems and natural self-regulation. These mature vines access deeper soil layers and minerals, contributing to the wine's complexity and depth of flavour. The resulting wine shows greater concentration, more nuanced tannin structure, and enhanced ability to age gracefully - all evident in this Shiraz's layered profile and cellaring potential.
