This is Eden Valley at its most compelling. Deep, inky, and built for the long haul. Whether you're drawn to the ripest red berries and blackberries on the nose or the liquorice and graphite complexity that unfolds with every sip, this wine is cashing all the cheques it wrote in its youth. Drinking an absolute dream right now.

Why do we love this wine?

Eden Valley elevation meets old-vine intensity - this is why we cellar wines. From vines planted in the early 1980s at 430 metres elevation, this Eden Valley classic showcases exactly what happens when cool-climate precision meets decades of vine maturity. Hand-harvested in the cool morning air, basket-pressed, then ten months in top-quality French oak - this is winemaking done right. The nose tells the whole story: Sarsaparilla, mulberries and fresh vanilla bean grip the drinker immediately, while crushed blackberries and black plums add depth. There's a cedary thread that seasons rather than dominates, plus hints of violets, graphite, and that distinctive Eden Valley spice that makes collectors weak at the knees. On the palate, this bad-boy means business. An intense, dark-fruited core with sustained berry flavours and fine-grained tannins that fold seamlessly into a lasting finish. The mid-palate delivers a burst of plush fruit that signals serious aging potential, while great tannin focus through the middle gives it structure and grace.
TLDR: we are absolutely ON here!

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine combines the best of both worlds - Eden Valley's cool-climate elegance with the intensity that comes from old vines planted in the early 1980s. The 430-metre elevation creates slower ripening conditions that preserve natural acidity and develop complex aromatics, while the mature vine roots dig deep for concentrated flavours. This results in a more refined, structured style than typical warm-climate Shiraz, with distinctive spice notes and graphite minerality that Eden Valley is renowned for.

With its excellent tannin structure, old-vine concentration, and 95-point rating from Nick Butler, this wine has serious aging potential spanning 10-15 years from vintage. The fine-grained tannins and sustained berry flavours indicate it's built for the long haul, while the French oak integration suggests it's already drinking beautifully now. Peak drinking will likely occur between 2025-2030, when the fruit and oak achieve perfect harmony and the Eden Valley terroir characteristics fully emerge.

The wine's intense dark fruit core and cedary oak make it perfect for rich, savoury dishes that can match its power. Think slow-cooked lamb shoulder with rosemary, aged beef steaks, or game meats like venison. The plum and chocolate notes also complement dishes with earthy mushrooms or dark sauces, while the structured tannins cut through rich, fatty foods beautifully. Avoid delicate seafood or light poultry that would be overwhelmed by this wine's intensity.

The 2018 vintage in Eden Valley was marked by ideal growing conditions that allowed for extended hang time and optimal flavour development. Cool nights preserved the natural acidity while warm days concentrated the fruit flavours, creating wines with both power and elegance. This particular wine earned a 95-point rating and 'Killer Vintage' designation, indicating that 2018 produced fruit with exceptional balance between the intense berry flavours and the refined tannin structure that defines great Eden Valley Shiraz.

Prepare for an aromatic explosion of sarsaparilla, mulberries, and vanilla bean that immediately signals this wine's quality and complexity. The palate delivers intense dark fruit with crushed blackberries and plums, supported by fine-grained tannins that provide structure without overwhelming the fruit. The distinctive Eden Valley spice and graphite minerality add layers of complexity, while the French oak contributes subtle cedar notes that enhance rather than mask the fruit. Decant for 30-60 minutes to fully appreciate its depth and allow the tannins to soften.
