This is big, brooding, beautiful shiraz. Deep and structured with plush plum and blackberry, woody spice and black olive complexity. Velvet tannins frame a palate that’s powerful, precise and almost infinitely cellar-worthy. 96 Halliday points and a Robert Parker “Outstanding” callout to back it up.

Why do we love this wine?

This is statement shiraz - and it’s got plenty to say. Deep ruby in the glass, it opens with blood plum and violets, before darker, deeper notes of black olives, leather, wild herbs and ground pepper unfurl with time. It’s one of those wines that keeps giving, every swirl revealing something new. The palate is big but not over-the-top, packed with dark fruit and ferrous earth. Mocha, graphite and fresh herbs come together in perfect harmony, and while it’s richly flavoured, there’s restraint too - everything is tucked neatly into place. The tannins are powerful but velvet smooth, delivering both muscle and grace. It’s already impressive, but the structure here is built to continue on for decades. They reckon 30 - 40 years easy, if you’ve got the patience. If you’re into great Australian shiraz, you don’t want to miss this.

Halliday Wine Companion

Halliday Wine Companion

This comes off the same site as the grenache, with vines planted in '39 to sandy gravels over red loam in Blewitt Springs. Some whole bunch in concrete fermenters; aged in foudre for about a year. The two reds share a lightness of touch, with the emphasis placed on fruit, site and season. As it should be. This shines in its spicy, mineral and subtly floral detail, with dried cherry and blackberry, pressed flowers, black tea, goji, scrubby herbs, tobacco leaf, iron, anise, white pepper, salted chocolate and ground coffee. The fruit has considerable depth and intensity, though it’s pleasingly absent of heft, with finely tooled but resolute tannins running through an energetic finish. Very smart indeed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Old vine shiraz produces grapes with incredible concentration and complexity because the mature root systems dig deep into the soil, accessing minerals and nutrients that younger vines simply can't reach. These ancient vines, often 50+ years old in McLaren Vale, naturally self-regulate their yields, meaning fewer but more intensely flavoured grapes. The result is wine with greater depth, more nuanced tannin structure, and the kind of layered complexity that unfolds over decades - exactly what you'll find in this McDougall bottling with its remarkable 30-40 year ageing potential.

Serve this powerful shiraz at cellar temperature (16-18°C) in large bowled glasses to allow those complex aromas of blood plum, violets, and wild herbs to fully express themselves. The wine's robust tannins and rich, earthy character make it perfect for grilled red meats, slow-braised lamb, or aged hard cheeses. Given its ferrous earth notes and graphite minerality, it also pairs beautifully with game meats or mushroom-based dishes that can match its intensity without being overwhelmed.

The exceptional ratings (96 points from both Halliday and Wine Pilot, 95 from Robert Parker) reflect this shiraz's rare combination of power and finesse. Critics recognise the masterful balance between rich, concentrated fruit and elegant restraint - it's 'big but not over-the-top' as described. The wine demonstrates classic McLaren Vale terroir expression while showcasing the winemaker's skill in handling old vine fruit, creating a shiraz that's both immediately impressive and built for long-term cellaring, earning it Halliday's Special Value Award.

Initially, you'll experience the primary fruit characters of blood plum and violets, but this shiraz reveals its true complexity with time in glass and bottle. The secondary flavours of black olives, leather, and wild herbs emerge through aeration, while tertiary development over years will bring out more savoury elements like the mocha and graphite notes already present. McLaren Vale shiraz is renowned for developing beautiful leather, tobacco, and earthy complexity while maintaining its fruit core, making this a fascinating wine to follow over its predicted 30-40 year lifespan.

This shiraz offers the best of both worlds - it's already showing beautifully with its velvet-smooth tannins and harmonious integration, making it thoroughly enjoyable now. However, the wine's structured backbone and old vine concentration mean it will continue evolving and improving for decades. If drinking now, decant for an hour to let those complex aromatics fully unfold. For cellaring, the wine's natural acidity and tannin structure provide the framework for graceful ageing, with peak drinking likely occurring between 10-25 years from vintage.
