Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Intense, swirling, pronounced red and black fruit. The kind of wine that feels so immediately satisfying as it glides across the palate. Prickly little tannins grab at the tongue but they’re cleaned up by lashings of ripe raspberry, roasted coffee, and briary fruits. That density is urged on by freshness and focus, and the wine finishes long and clean - some vanilla and dark chocolate rounding out the complex flavour profile. At once elegant and punchy. Enjoy it now in all its exuberance, or cellar a while and let the moody, leathery, earthy intensity come to the fore.

Frequently Asked Questions

Durif is a rare French grape variety that's actually a cross between Syrah and Peloursin, creating wines with exceptional intensity and colour depth. In Australia's Rutherglen region, the warm climate allows Durif to develop its characteristic full-bodied structure and concentrated fruit flavours. This variety is known for producing wines with robust tannins and rich, dark fruit profiles that can age beautifully for decades.

Rutherglen's warm continental climate and well-draining soils provide perfect conditions for Durif to reach full phenolic ripeness. The region's hot days and cool nights help preserve the grape's natural acidity while allowing the development of complex flavours like the roasted coffee and dark chocolate notes found in this wine. Rutherglen has been producing exceptional fortified wines for over 150 years, and this expertise translates beautifully to their table wines.

Serve this Durif at 16-18°C to showcase its complex flavour profile of raspberry, coffee, and dark chocolate. Decant for 30-60 minutes before serving to allow the wine to breathe and soften those characteristic prickly tannins. The wine's intensity pairs beautifully with rich dishes like braised beef, aged cheeses, or dark chocolate desserts that can match its powerful structure.

A 95-point rating from James Halliday represents exceptional quality, placing this wine in the top tier of Australian wines. Halliday's scoring system rates wines from 94-100 points as 'outstanding to exceptional', meaning this Durif demonstrates remarkable complexity, balance, and ageing potential. The additional Special Value Award indicates this wine offers extraordinary quality for its price point, making it a standout purchase.

This Durif is designed for both immediate enjoyment and cellaring, with the potential to develop for 8-12 years or more. While delicious now with its exuberant fruit character, cellaring will allow the wine's moody, leathery, and earthy complexity to emerge as the tannins integrate and secondary flavours develop. Store in a cool, dark place at consistent temperature, and expect the wine to show increasing sophistication and depth over time.
