Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

If you find yourself driving amongst the traffic chaos of Paris, take a quick half an hour detour and relax at the Domaine la Bouche du Roi. Located in the pretty little village of Davron, this urban wine-growing region creates incredible wines of terroir. They are a truly magnificent discovery right out of a renaissance painting. And these wines are truly dazzling. You can experience the terroir as you’re sipping, even among the gumtrees on your Aussie verandah. Our pick of the reds is the merlot; a rare rouge that’s loaded with enough flavour to leave you speechless.

The 2020 merlot is a lesson in elegance, with a warm fruitiness filled with fleshy plums, and a dynamism bringing merlot to life. Full bodied, yet elegant fine, cedary tannins, this unique vineyard shows off an exceptional vintage, and is too an exceptional merlot. Limited quantities produced, so get it while you can.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Merlot comes from Davron, an urban wine-growing region near Paris, rather than the famous Bordeaux appellations. The terroir here produces a more elegant expression with cedary tannins and exceptional dynamism that brings the variety to life. Unlike the often heavier Bordeaux blends, this single-varietal Merlot showcases pure fruit character with fleshy plums while maintaining remarkable finesse.

Serve this wine at cellar temperature (16-18°C) to best appreciate its textured, savoury profile and elegant tannin structure. The medium body and plum-raspberry fruit flavours make it versatile for food pairing - try it with roasted lamb, mushroom risotto, or aged cheeses. Decanting for 30 minutes will help open up the allspice notes and soften the fine tannins.

The allspice notes create beautiful synergy with dishes featuring warm spices like Moroccan tagines or Indian lamb curry. The plum and raspberry fruit complements duck breast with cherry sauce or pork tenderloin with fruit compotes. For cheese pairings, try aged Gouda or Manchego, where the wine's savoury texture balances the nutty, crystalline cheese textures perfectly.

The 2020 vintage in France was exceptional, marked by ideal weather conditions that produced concentrated, well-balanced wines. This particular Merlot showcases the vintage's strengths with its warm fruitiness and structural elegance. The producer describes it as an exceptional vintage that allowed their unique terroir to truly shine, resulting in limited production quantities that reflect the year's quality.

This elegant Merlot is drinking beautifully now, showcasing its vibrant fruit and fine tannin structure at four years of age. The cedary tannins and medium body suggest it will continue to develop gracefully for another 3-5 years, allowing the allspice notes to integrate further. Given the limited production quantities, it's wise not to wait too long - the wine's current balance of fruit freshness and structural complexity represents its peak drinking window.
