This is proper Côte de Beaune doing what it does best - understated, elegant, and quietly confident. Santenay might fly under the radar compared to some of its flashier neighbours, but when it’s made this well, it more than holds its own. This is the kind of Burgundy you open because you feel like drinking something good.

Why do we love this wine?

Straight out of the gate you’re getting bright red cherry and raspberry, fresh and crunchy, with florals floating through - rose petal, maybe a bit of peony if you’re feeling poetic. There’s a gentle dusting of baking spice and that earthy Burgundian hum underneath that reminds you this comes from real vineyards, not a lab. The 2023 vintage brings lovely ripeness without losing its cool, so the fruit feels pure and vibrant, backed by fresh acidity and fine, neatly stitched tannins. On the palate it’s balanced and composed - nothing shouty, nothing heavy-handed. Just clean red fruit, subtle savoury detail and a silky texture that keeps you coming back for another sip. It’s elegant in that very Burgundian way - not trying to impress, just casually being excellent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Santenay sits at the southern tip of the Côte de Beaune, where the limestone soils contain more clay and iron oxide, giving wines like this 2023 Protheau a distinctive earthy character with leather undertones. The slightly warmer microclimate here allows Pinot Noir to develop more robust tannins while maintaining Burgundy's signature elegance. This terroir produces wines that bridge the gap between the finesse of Côte de Beaune and the power of Côte de Nuits.

The sour cherry profile in this 2023 Pinot Noir reflects both the variety's natural acidity and Burgundy's cool climate fermentation conditions. Young Burgundian Pinot Noir often displays tart red fruit characteristics that evolve into more complex flavours with age. The combination of limestone-rich soils and traditional winemaking techniques at Domaine J.F. Protheau preserves this bright cherry character while allowing the wine's earthy complexity to emerge.

Serve this Santenay at 16-18°C to showcase its medium-bodied structure and complex aromatics. The wine's earthy and leather notes pair beautifully with roasted poultry, mushroom dishes, or aged cheeses like Époisses from the same region. Decanting for 30 minutes will help integrate the tannins and allow the sour cherry fruit to harmonise with the wine's mineral backbone.

The 2023 vintage in Burgundy benefited from a warm, dry summer that concentrated flavours while maintaining good acidity levels. This Santenay shows the vintage's characteristic intensity, with the earthy and leather notes being particularly pronounced due to the concentrated fruit. While still young, 2023 Burgundies are showing excellent balance and aging potential, making this an ideal time to experience the vintage's distinctive character.

The earthy leather characteristics in this Santenay make it exceptional with game birds, wild mushroom risotto, or beef bourguignon - dishes that echo the wine's terroir-driven complexity. The wine's medium body and sour cherry acidity also work beautifully with duck confit or coq au vin, where the leather notes complement rich, slow-cooked flavours. For cheese, try it with washed-rind varieties or aged Gruyère to highlight the wine's mineral depth.
