Why do we love this wine?

Gigondas is a small appellation that sits inside the broader Cotes du Rhone appellation - it is famous for producing exceptional grenache dominant red blends, the best of which go toe-to-toe with Rhone powerhouse Chateuneuf du Pape. The Domaine des Bosquets ‘Le Plateau’ is, first and foremost, a commanding wine. It is richly fruited, baked (but not stewy) red fruits and deeply ripe toover ripe black currant, brample and blood plum. Clove and fennel mix with tobacco and wet earth to round out what is a distinctly powerful wine. It has had enough down-time to find itself in the right drinking spot, but there’s no rush, you’ve easily got ten years to drink this (and that’s conservatively - my gut says anytime before 2040).

The nearly 100-year-old Mourvèdre vines cropped a mere 10 hectoliters per hectare for the 2019 Gigondas Le Plateau, meaning there are just three demi-muids. It's a powerful, richly tannic version of this wine, full-bodied but not inelegant, marrying plummy fruit with spicy complexities reminiscent of tree bark, star anise, clove and more. While reasonably open as a barrel sample, I suspect it will close down and require several years of aging after release yet be capable of drinking well for two decades.

Frequently Asked Questions

Gigondas is a prestigious cru within the Côtes du Rhône that specialises in Grenache-dominant blends, often rivalling the famous Châteauneuf-du-Pape in quality and power. The appellation's unique terroir, with its rocky plateau soils and Mediterranean climate, produces wines with exceptional concentration and aging potential. This particular Le Plateau bottling showcases the commanding style Gigondas is renowned for, with its rich fruit intensity and complex earthy undertones.

This wine has already had sufficient bottle age to reach an excellent drinking window, but its aging potential extends well beyond the present. With its full-bodied structure and concentrated fruit, you can confidently cellar it for another decade, with conservative estimates suggesting it will remain at peak until 2035-2040. The wine's powerful tannin structure and natural acidity provide the backbone needed for extended aging, allowing the complex spice and earth notes to further integrate.

The wine's commanding presence and rich fruit profile make it ideal for robust dishes that can match its intensity. Think slow-braised lamb with herbs de Provence, grilled ribeye with rosemary, or hearty game dishes like venison or wild boar. The tobacco and wet earth notes also complement aged cheeses beautifully, while the spice elements of clove and fennel pair wonderfully with Mediterranean cuisine featuring olives, roasted vegetables, and herb-crusted meats.

The exceptional ratings from Robert Parker (97pts), Jeb Dunnuck (96pts), and Decanter (94pts) reflect the wine's remarkable balance of power and finesse. Critics have recognised how Domaine des Bosquets has captured the essence of Gigondas terroir - the baked red fruits show ripeness without being jammy, while the complex interplay of spice, tobacco, and earth demonstrates sophisticated winemaking. The 2019 vintage was particularly favourable in the Southern Rhône, allowing for optimal ripeness and concentration.

While this wine is listed as 'Other Red', Gigondas regulations require a minimum of 50% Grenache, which forms the backbone of most blends in the appellation. Producers typically complement Grenache with Syrah for structure and spice, and Mourvèdre for tannin and earthiness, creating the complex flavour profile evident in this Le Plateau bottling. The combination of these Mediterranean varieties, grown on the rocky soils of the Dentelles de Montmirail foothills, produces the distinctive powerful yet elegant style that defines quality Gigondas.
