Gigondas is a small appellation that sits inside the broader Southern Rhone wine region - it is famous for producing exceptional grenache dominant red blends, the best of which go toe-to-toe with Rhone powerhouse Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Why do we love this wine?

If you were looking for a wine that typifies the wines of Gigondas, well, look no more. Rich plums, spice, pebbly minerality, some baked rhubarb tartness that tightens your face a little as you imbibe. The aromatic profile casts a wide net - from rose petal to tobacco to bitter orange peel and amaro - making for a truly intriguing and complex experience.

Coming from a tiny parcel of Grenache, the 2019 Gigondas La Colline should be up with the top wines in the vintage as well. Revealing a deep purple/ruby hue and a gorgeous perfume of black raspberries, orange blossom, spice, and flowers, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a seamless texture, and ripe yet present tannins. It’s a more elegant version than the 2016 and is going to evolve for a solid 15 years. The young Julien Brechet continues to keep this estate in the top tier of producers, not only in Gigondas, but in the entire Southern Rhône. His 2018s show the more supple, elegant style of the vintage yet still bring ample richness and depth. These are seamless, Provençal, incredibly sexy wines to enjoy over the coming decade or so. The 2019s are slightly deeper, richer wines yet still show beautiful purity and elegance. In addition to the quality, these wines show singular character and are just a joy to taste through

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine earned exceptional scores of 97 points from Jeb Dunnuck and 96 points from Robert Parker because it perfectly captures the essence of Gigondas terroir. The combination of rich fruit concentration, distinctive pebbly minerality from the region's famous galets roulés (rolled stones), and complex aromatic layers creates a wine that showcases why Gigondas is considered one of the Southern Rhône's premier appellations. The full-bodied structure and textural complexity demonstrate the producer's mastery of traditional winemaking techniques.

Grenache forms the backbone of this blend, contributing the rich plum and blackberry fruit flavours while providing the wine's full-bodied weight and generous texture. The supporting varietals likely include Syrah for structure and spice, and possibly Mourvèdre for earthy complexity and tannin backbone. This traditional Southern Rhône blend creates the wine's signature combination of ripe fruit, savoury herbs, and mineral undertones that make Gigondas wines so distinctive and age-worthy.

The wine's rich fruit profile, savoury spice notes, and full-bodied structure make it ideal for hearty Mediterranean cuisine like braised lamb with herbs de Provence, grilled beef with rosemary, or aged hard cheeses. The allspice and tobacco notes complement game meats beautifully, while the underlying minerality pairs wonderfully with dishes featuring olives, roasted vegetables, or cassoulet. The wine's complexity also makes it excellent with charcuterie boards featuring cured meats and pâtés.

This 2019 vintage is drinking beautifully now but has excellent ageing potential for 10-15 years or more, thanks to Gigondas' reputation for producing long-lived wines. The full-bodied structure, balanced acidity, and quality tannins will allow the wine to develop additional complexity over time, with the fruit flavours evolving into more tertiary notes of leather, earth, and dried herbs. Store it in a cool, dark place and consider decanting when serving to fully appreciate its evolving character.

Domaine des Bosquets has established itself as a quality-focused producer in Gigondas, crafting wines that truly express the unique terroir of this elevated appellation in the Southern Rhône Valley. Their approach emphasises traditional winemaking methods that highlight the distinctive pebbly minerality and complex fruit character that Gigondas is famous for. The 'La Colline' cuvée represents their commitment to showcasing specific vineyard sites, resulting in wines with exceptional depth and authenticity that consistently earn recognition from international critics.
