Few wines are as unabashedly, beautifully, boisterously fun as the Beaujolais. This is absolutely no exception.

Why do we love this wine?

Don’t be fooled by the ‘Villages’ designation. While wines from this tier of the region can be fantastic, this one tends toward exceptional. The vineyards are hilly, and of higher altitude than even the Brouilly cru. That height gives cooler nights, greater complexity, driving acidity and plenty of daytime sunshine to boot. Look for classic gamay notes: jubilant berries, potting soil, slatey minerality and lighter, quaffable body. This is beyond perfect with roast turkey, though chicken will do just fine, too. This is the red to pack for your spring picnic in the park, sit back and let the good times roll.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine comes from high-altitude, hilly vineyards that sit even higher than the prestigious Brouilly cru, creating unique growing conditions. The elevation provides cooler nights that preserve acidity and complexity while still allowing ample daytime sunshine for ripening. This combination of factors elevates it well beyond typical Villages-level wines, delivering exceptional depth and character that rivals more expensive appellations.

Gamay thrives in Beaujolais' granite-rich soils, producing wines with distinctive jubilant berry flavours and earthy minerality that reflects the terroir. The grape's naturally high acidity and lighter tannin structure make it incredibly food-friendly and approachable young. Unlike heavier reds that can overwhelm delicate dishes, Gamay's bright, quaffable nature makes it versatile enough for everything from roast turkey to casual picnic fare.

This wine shines with poultry - particularly roast turkey and chicken - where its medium body and bright acidity complement rather than compete with the meat. The wine's earthy minerality and berry notes also make it excellent for charcuterie, mushroom dishes, and lighter game birds. Its approachable style and balanced structure make it perfect for outdoor dining and casual gatherings where you want something sophisticated yet easy-drinking.

The blueberry provides the wine's fruit-forward foundation typical of quality Gamay, while the allspice adds warming complexity that comes from the grape's natural spiciness and the terroir. The minerality - described as 'slatey' - reflects the granite soils of Beaujolais and provides a backbone that prevents the wine from being overly fruity. This combination creates a wine that's both immediately appealing and intellectually satisfying, with layers that unfold as you drink.

This 2022 is absolutely ready to drink now and showcases Gamay's appeal as a wine meant for immediate enjoyment. Beaujolais Villages wines are typically made to be consumed within 3-5 years of vintage, when their fresh fruit character and vibrant acidity are at their peak. While it could develop some additional complexity over the next year or two, its current balance of jubilant berries and bright acidity makes it perfect for enjoying today.
