Dark, complex and vibrant! This is a cracking example of Morgon Beaujolais, just the second time that a Beaujolais has been included in Decanter's 'Best in Show' selection. This is a complete world-beater of "astonishing charm".

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

A complex array of black, red and purple fruits, velvet-like tannins, with a fleshy, fullness to the palate. This is a deeply elegant wine but not one without power. The weight of this wine is dictated by a dense core of blackberry, cherry and blueberry whilst the natural acid and silky tannins build a gorgeous texture and build to phenomenally long finish. This is a pristine wine, aged completely in concrete with zero reduction, it's all about the purity of the fruit that comes off the world-famous vineyards of Morgon.

Frequently Asked Questions

While most Beaujolais wines are light and fruity, this Morgon showcases the exceptional terroir of one of Beaujolais' ten crus. The granite soils and steep slopes of Morgon produce Gamay with remarkable depth and structure, resulting in a wine with velvet-like tannins and a dense core of dark fruits. The concrete ageing preserves the purity of fruit while allowing the wine to develop complexity that rivals many premium Burgundies.

The 97 points and Best in Show recognition reflect this wine's exceptional balance of power and elegance. The judges would have been impressed by its pristine fruit expression, achieved through zero reduction winemaking in concrete vessels. This approach allows the famous Morgon terroir to shine through, creating a wine that demonstrates both immediate appeal and long-term ageing potential - a hallmark of truly outstanding wines.

Serve this Morgon at 16-18°C to allow its complex fruit profile and silky tannins to fully express themselves. Decant for 30-60 minutes before serving to help integrate the dense blackberry and cherry flavours with the wine's natural acidity. The medium body and elegant structure make it versatile enough for both casual drinking and special occasions, though its phenomenally long finish deserves contemplative sipping.

This rich, full-bodied Morgon pairs beautifully with roasted duck, lamb with herbs, or aged cheeses like Comté or Roquefort. The wine's fleshy fullness and velvet tannins complement game birds and mushroom dishes particularly well. Unlike lighter Beaujolais styles, this wine's weight and complexity can stand up to heartier fare while its natural acidity cuts through rich sauces and fatty meats.

This 2023 Morgon is drinking beautifully now, showcasing vibrant fruit and accessible tannins that make it immediately enjoyable. However, given its dense structure and phenomenal length, it has excellent cellaring potential of 8-12 years. The concrete ageing has preserved the wine's natural freshness while building complexity, meaning it will continue to develop nuanced secondary flavours of earth, spice, and dried fruits with proper storage.
