Beaujolais is often conflated with ligh and fruity character, but this is intensity and concentration incarnate. Powerful, deep, bursting red and blue fruits make up the dense core of what is a genuinely serious wine.

Why do we love this wine?

Très Vielle Vigne translates to "very old vines" and in the case of this wine, we're talking over 80 years old. You'll find the vineyard on granitic soils which is caressed with the 'just right' amount of sunlight for gentle ripening. Think of the granite soils as imparting energy and minerality, which balances the deep and dark flavours with a kind of freshness. This has unending complexity to discover.

This smells and tastes like the essence of Moulin-a-Vent, with stunning red fruit aromas plus delicate spicy and earthy notes. Wonderful freshness and precision for this very hot and dry vintage on the medium- to full-bodied palate. The contours of the tannins are very precise, giving this an astonishing clarity in the very long finish. Two thirds were 100% whole cluster and one third was destemmed. Everything was fermented and maturated in concrete tanks.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 'Très Vieille Vigne' designation means these Gamay vines are over 80 years old, which is extraordinary in the wine world. Old vines naturally produce lower yields but concentrate flavours more intensely, creating wines with greater complexity and depth. These ancient roots have also developed deep relationships with the granitic soils over decades, allowing them to extract unique mineral characteristics that younger vines simply cannot access.

Granite is one of the most prized soil types in Beaujolais, particularly in the cru appellations like Moulin-à-Vent. The granite imparts a distinctive minerality and energy to the wine, creating that characteristic 'freshness' that balances the deep, dark fruit flavours. This geological foundation also provides excellent drainage while retaining just enough moisture, allowing the vines to ripen gently and develop the complex flavour profile that earned this wine 96 points from James Suckling.

Moulin-à-Vent is often called the 'King of Beaujolais' because it produces the most structured and age-worthy wines in the region. Unlike lighter Beaujolais styles, Moulin-à-Vent develops more tannin and complexity, often showing characteristics closer to Burgundy than typical Gamay. The combination of granitic soils, old vines, and this specific terroir creates wines with remarkable depth - evident in this bottle's textured, savoury profile with notes of liquorice, plum, and minerality.

A 96-point score from James Suckling places this wine in the 'outstanding' category, indicating exceptional quality that's rare for Beaujolais wines. This rating suggests the wine demonstrates perfect harmony between its old vine concentration, granitic minerality, and varietal expression. Such high scores for Gamay-based wines are uncommon, highlighting how Domaine Anita has crafted something truly special that transcends typical expectations for the variety.

Given its medium-bodied structure and 'unending complexity', this wine rewards patient exploration rather than quick consumption. Start by noting the interplay between the dark fruit flavours (plum, liquorice) and the granitic minerality that provides backbone. The textured, savoury style means it will evolve significantly in the glass, revealing different layers as it opens up - a characteristic of truly great old vine wines that have both power and finesse.
