‘Reine de Nuit’ translates to Queen of the Night, referencing the practice of harvesting the grapes for this wine in the cool of the evening. The resulting wine is brightly acidic, maintaining freshness and fruit pruity throughout.

Why do we love this wine?

The 40 year old vines offer up fruit that displays freshness on the nose in the form of redcurrants and raspberry, leading to a smooth and generous palate. The Anita wines are all marked by fruit concentration and depth, but perhaps none more so than the Reine de Nuit. Thoroughly good wine.

This rich and velvety, mouth-filling Moulin-a-Vent has a gracefulness and lightness of touch that takes your breath away. Stacks of black fruit aromas, but not a jot loud. Extremely long, structured finish that somehow manages to be totally engaging, almost charming. From the Aux Caves site, which is south-facing and has a sandy granitic soil. This is 100% whole cluster. Matured in used oak barrels from Burgundy for just under a year.

Frequently Asked Questions

While most Beaujolais are light and fruity, this Moulin-à-Vent represents one of the region's most serious crus, capable of producing structured, age-worthy wines. The 40-year-old vines contribute exceptional concentration and complexity, transforming the typically bright Gamay into something with real depth and mineral backbone. This particular bottling, 'Reine de Nuit' (Queen of the Night), showcases the darker, more powerful side of what Gamay can achieve in Moulin-à-Vent's granite soils.

Serve this medium-bodied Gamay slightly cooler than typical reds - around 14-16°C - to preserve its fresh redcurrant and raspberry character while allowing the textural elements to shine. The wine's savoury, mineral qualities make it incredibly food-friendly, particularly with roasted poultry, mushroom dishes, or charcuterie. Given its 97-point rating from James Suckling, consider decanting for 30 minutes to fully appreciate its concentrated fruit and smooth palate.

A 97-point score from James Suckling places this wine in exceptional territory - it's considered outstanding quality that represents the pinnacle of what this producer and region can achieve. This rating suggests the wine displays perfect balance between its fresh fruit character and underlying complexity, with flawless winemaking technique. For a Beaujolais Gamay to achieve such recognition indicates this bottle transcends typical regional expectations and competes with the world's finest wines.

Unlike most Beaujolais which are meant for early consumption, Moulin-à-Vent has genuine ageing potential thanks to its structured tannins and mineral backbone. The 2022 vintage's combination of fruit concentration from old vines and the wine's textural, savoury profile suggests it will develop beautifully over 5-8 years. As it matures, expect the bright berry flavours to evolve into more complex notes of earth, spice, and dried fruits while maintaining that characteristic Gamay elegance.

The wine's medium body and savoury, mineral character make it exceptionally versatile with food, particularly dishes that bridge rustic and refined cooking. Think duck confit, wild mushroom risotto, or aged hard cheeses where the wine's blackberry and mineral notes can complement earthy flavours. The textural quality also pairs beautifully with grilled salmon or tuna, while its fresh acidity cuts through richer preparations like coq au vin or beef bourguignon - classic Burgundian pairings that honour the wine's French heritage.
