Why do we love this wine?

The 2021 vintage of this stunner received a whopping 97 points, and the 2022 vintage has gone one step further – a mesmerising 98 points from Suckling. Fresh blue fruit and raspberry coulis lay over a sappy woodiness. The tannin is fine but grippy enough to offer a little coarseness and a lot of structure. There is soy and umami, but this is all about the berries. The compact fruit core punches right up the middle of the palate. Electric Beaujolais that makes a damn fine case for gamay’s cellaring potential. Anita Kuhnel is a master at work, there’s no doubt about it

Be prepared to sink into a deep ocean trench where everything is dark and mysterious. Enormous nose of black fruit and bitter chocolate with a hint of very old balsamic vinegar. How can this much power and concentration feel this gentle on the full-bodied palate? The precision of the vinification has guided this masterpiece to a fabulous harmony. Gigantic finish with a wealth of black fruit, spice and a delicate savory line running through it. Matured in used oak barrels from Burgundy for just under a year. Drink or hold.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Morgon Le Clachet showcases the exceptional terroir of one of Beaujolais' most prestigious crus, where granite soils and optimal vineyard positioning create wines with remarkable depth and ageing potential. Unlike lighter Beaujolais styles, Morgon produces structured, medium-bodied wines that develop complex earthy and mineral characteristics over time. Anita Kuhnel's meticulous winemaking amplifies these terroir-driven qualities, resulting in a wine that challenges preconceptions about Gamay's sophistication and longevity.

With its impressive structure and James Suckling's 98-point rating, this Morgon demonstrates exceptional cellaring potential that extends well beyond typical Beaujolais expectations. The fine but grippy tannins and concentrated fruit core suggest this wine will evolve beautifully over 8-12 years, developing tertiary aromas of forest floor, leather, and spice. Gamay from premier Morgon sites like Le Clachet historically ages gracefully, with the best examples remaining vibrant and complex for up to 15 years when properly stored.

The wine's umami-rich profile and medium body make it exceptionally versatile with both rustic and refined cuisine. Classic pairings include coq au vin, duck confit, or aged cheeses like Comté, where the wine's earthy minerality complements rich, savoury flavours. The fresh berry fruit and structured tannins also work beautifully with grilled lamb, mushroom risotto, or even Asian dishes featuring soy-based sauces, highlighting the wine's noted umami characteristics.

Anita Kuhnel represents the new generation of Beaujolais vignerons who are revolutionising perceptions of the region through meticulous vineyard management and minimal intervention winemaking. Her focus on expressing individual terroir characteristics, particularly from prestigious sites like Le Clachet, has earned international acclaim and cult status among wine enthusiasts. The dramatic improvement from 97 points in 2021 to 98 points in 2022 demonstrates her evolving mastery and commitment to pushing Gamay to its absolute potential.

The 'sappy woodiness' suggests careful integration of oak treatment that enhances rather than masks the wine's natural fruit expression. This character typically develops when quality French oak is used judiciously, allowing the wood to contribute structural complexity and subtle spice notes without overwhelming Gamay's delicate fruit profile. Combined with the wine's fresh blue fruit and raspberry notes, this indicates a sophisticated approach to elevage that preserves varietal character while adding layers of texture and complexity.
