Wow, what a wine. A must-have for any McLaren Vale die-hards or pretty much anyone with a mouth and a heart. Rich dark fruit, chocolatey oak and fine-grained tannins. A classic Aussie style with 8 years under the belt, primed and raring to go.

Why do we love this wine?

Di Fabio Estate are a real wine-producer's producer. With a history in Australia dating back to the mid 60's, and much much longer in Italy, the Di Fabio family earned their stripes selling grapes to some of McLaren Vale's biggest names. As the years went by and whispers of their fruit's fantastic quality grew louder, they transitioned into full wine production and when we taste this gorgeous drop, we're so happy that they did. With premium fruit from old bushvines in the Blewitt Springs sub-region, and a little bit of generational know-how, Di Fabio has crafted the ultimate people-pleaser. A dense, dark fruited wine that, although full-bodied, doesn't feel sluggish or clunky on the palate. Lively and rich blackberries and dark cherries are balanced by milk chocolate and sweet spice, a result of a very comprehensive oak treatment regime. This is a wine that was drinking beautifully five years ago, drinks beautifully today and will still be drinking beautifully in five years time. If you're a McLaren Vale fan, do yourself a favour.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Shiraz comes from old bushvines in the prestigious Blewitt Springs sub-region of McLaren Vale. Bushvines are ungrafted vines that grow as free-standing shrubs rather than being trained on wires, typically producing lower yields but more concentrated fruit. The 'old vine' designation means these vines have developed deep root systems over decades, accessing unique soil minerals and creating wines with greater complexity and character than younger plantings.

This is described as a museum release that exemplifies perfect aging potential - it was drinking beautifully five years ago, is at its peak now, and will continue to develop gracefully for another five years. The 2016 vintage has allowed the initial fruit intensity to integrate beautifully with the oak, creating that perfect balance of rich blackberry and dark cherry with milk chocolate notes. You can enjoy it immediately or cellar it with confidence.

Di Fabio represents a fascinating evolution from grape growers to acclaimed winemakers, with Italian heritage dating back generations and Australian roots from the mid-1960s. They initially earned their reputation by supplying premium fruit to McLaren Vale's biggest names, with whispers of their exceptional grape quality eventually convincing them to transition into full wine production. This background as 'a wine-producer's producer' means they understand both exceptional viticulture and the art of winemaking.

The comprehensive oak treatment regime has created a sophisticated flavour integration where the natural dark fruit characters of blackberry and cherry are enhanced rather than overwhelmed. The oak contributes those appealing milk chocolate and sweet spice notes without making the wine feel heavy or clunky despite its full-bodied nature. This careful balance is what allows the wine to remain lively and approachable while delivering the complexity expected from a reserve-level McLaren Vale Shiraz.

Blewitt Springs is one of McLaren Vale's most respected sub-regions, known for its unique ironstone soils and elevation that creates ideal conditions for premium Shiraz. The area's old bushvines have adapted to these specific terroir conditions over decades, producing fruit with distinctive mineral complexity and concentrated flavours. This sub-regional designation indicates you're getting fruit from some of the most sought-after vineyard sites in one of Australia's premier Shiraz regions.
