Why do we love this wine?

All hail David & Nadia, two new age winemakers who are driven by organic and ecological farming practises. Their sustainably farmed vineyard in South Africa is planted in deep, clay soils, allowing their old vines to flourish. Perfumed and floral with rich notes of red berries, this Swartland treasure is smooth and gentle. Red fruit forward, its palate is balanced with earthy notes and a little touch of truffle and vanilla. This wine is just light enough to be drunk with lunch and we suggest to pair it with the fanciest charcuterie platter you can whip up. We’re talking all the imported cheeses and meats you can’t pronounce. Add a little bit of raw honeycomb and fresh strawberries and you’ve got yourself a great time.

Beautifully fragrant with notes of lavender, rosemary and wild strawberries, plus paprika spice. It’s medium-bodied, sleek and elegant, with fine and peppery tannins and a deliciously fresh finish. Drink now or hold.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 1.5L magnum format offers several advantages for this premium Grenache. Magnums age more gracefully due to the slower oxygen exchange through the cork relative to the wine volume, allowing the complex earthy and truffle notes to develop more harmoniously. The larger format also makes a stunning centrepiece for special occasions, and with Grenache's food-friendly nature, a magnum is perfect for sharing with a group over that elaborate charcuterie spread.

Swartland's Mediterranean climate and ancient soils create ideal conditions for Grenache, allowing the variety to express its true character. The region's hot, dry summers concentrate flavours while the deep clay soils mentioned in this wine provide excellent water retention, crucial for old vines. This terroir combination produces Grenache with the perfect balance of power and elegance, showcasing both the bright red fruit and the earthy, mineral complexity that makes South African expressions so distinctive.

Their commitment to organic and ecological farming allows the vineyard's natural ecosystem to thrive, which translates directly into more complex flavour development. Healthy soil biology enhances the wine's mineral expression and contributes to those distinctive earthy and truffle notes. Organic viticulture also tends to produce grapes with more concentrated flavours and better natural acidity, explaining why this Grenache achieves such beautiful balance between its perfumed floral character and savoury depth.

Grenache's medium body and balanced acidity make it exceptionally versatile with cured meats and aged cheeses. The wine's red berry fruit provides a lovely contrast to salty, fatty charcuterie, while its earthy undertones complement the umami flavours in aged cheeses. The gentle tannin structure won't overpower delicate items like honeycomb or fresh strawberries, and Grenache's natural food-friendly acidity helps cleanse the palate between different flavours on the board.

A 94-point score from James Suckling places this wine in the 'outstanding' category, indicating exceptional quality and complexity. This rating suggests the wine successfully balances its varietal character with terroir expression, likely praising the seamless integration of fruit, earth, and oak elements. For a relatively young producer like David & Nadia, such recognition validates their sustainable approach and demonstrates that South African Grenache can compete with the world's finest expressions of this variety.
