These wines generally just don’t make it all the way to Australia, with small production and allocation-only supply: this is one grenache blend you don't want to sleep on.

Why do we love this wine?

We are truly blessed to have this wine in our shed. It’s from the tiny production, family-owned independent producer of David & Nadia, who are becoming known as one of the premier producers in the country. David & Nadia spent ten years preparing their old dry-farmed bush vines to be ready to produce a wine of this calibre, letting the vineyard do the talking by acting with minimal intervention in the winery. There’s grenache, syrah, carignan, cinsault and pinotage in the blend, all laid to rest in oak for a year. The wine is so complex, so layered and so compelling. Enjoy it while you can, wines like this don’t come around very often.

54% Grenache Noir, 31% Syrah, 13% Carignan, 1% Pinotage and 1% Cinsaut. Red and black berries, lavender, fynbos and white pepper on the nose while the palate is medium-bodied with lovely fruit purity, fresh acidity and powdery tannins – good structure and length, another convincing argument for the merits of this vintage.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Elpidios represents a decade-long commitment to vineyard preparation, with David & Nadia nurturing old dry-farmed bush vines to achieve optimal expression. This meticulous approach, combined with their minimal intervention winemaking philosophy, allows the Swartland terroir to shine through authentically. The 94-point James Suckling rating and 'Cult Producer' status reflect their emergence as one of South Africa's premier boutique wineries, creating wines that rival the world's best.

The five-variety blend (grenache, syrah, carignan, cinsault, and pinotage) reflects the traditional Rhône-style approach adapted to South African conditions. Each variety contributes distinct characteristics - grenache provides elegance and red fruit, syrah adds structure and spice, carignan brings acidity and minerality, cinsault offers finesse, while pinotage adds a uniquely South African character. This complexity creates layers of flavour that evolve beautifully in the glass and develop further with cellaring.

The black olive notes come from the Mediterranean-style varieties and Swartland's warm, dry climate, providing a savoury, mineral-driven backbone that's characteristic of premium South African reds. The chocolate flavours develop from the year-long oak maturation and the natural concentration of the old bush vines. Together, they create a sophisticated flavour profile that balances richness with restraint, making this wine food-friendly yet complex enough to enjoy on its own.

Dry-farming means the vines receive no irrigation, forcing their roots to dig deep into the Swartland soils to find water and nutrients. This stress concentrates flavours and creates more complex, mineral-driven wines. Bush vines are trained low to the ground without trellising, a traditional method that protects grapes from harsh winds while maintaining lower yields. The combination results in intensely flavoured, small berries that produce wines with exceptional concentration and authentic terroir expression.

With its medium body, textured savoury profile, and quality oak integration, this wine will develop beautifully over 8-12 years, though it's drinking superbly now. The black olive and mineral notes make it perfect for Mediterranean cuisine, grilled lamb, or aged cheeses, while the chocolate undertones complement game meats and rich stews. The wine's complexity means it will reward patient cellaring, developing tertiary flavours that showcase the true potential of Swartland terroir.
