This is majestic Barossa shiraz, firing on all cylinders. One of the greatest wines from one of the greatest sub-regions in the country. Immediate allure for the impatient among us, decades of cellaring potential for those with monk-like discipline. Either way, you're winning. Why do we love this wine?

Many reckon Marananga is the absolute best of the Barossa Valley, and this sensational vintage proves exactly why. Just 300 cases ever made - seriously limited gear. Balanced, concentrated and genuinely intense with a finish that stretches on forever. Plenty of dark fruit and coffee-like flavours emerge as it as it opens up, adding layers of complexity. Beautifully focused with at least fifteen years ahead, delivering immense drinking pleasure. This is Barossa shiraz from one of its most celebrated pockets, crafted in a vintage everyone's talking about. Limited production, maximum impact.

"A cracking Barossa Shiraz from a sensational vintage, many consider the Marananga sub-region to be the very heart of the Valley. Just 300 dozen made. Black/maroon in colour, this is balanced, concentrated and intense, with a very long finish. The nose gives us notes of chocolate, mocha, soy, graphite, black fruits and mulberries. The structure is seamless, the texture seductive and the tannins silky. The palate sees the emergence of notes of sour cherries, coffee grinds and Kirsch. Well focused, the wine has at least fifteen years ahead of it of providing immense pleasure."

Frequently Asked Questions

Marananga sits in the heart of the Barossa Valley and is widely considered its premium Shiraz-producing pocket due to its unique terroir combination of ancient soils, elevation, and microclimate. The sub-region's red clay over limestone creates ideal drainage while retaining enough moisture for the vines, resulting in Shiraz with exceptional concentration and structure. This particular vineyard site allows the grapes to develop intense flavours while maintaining the elegant balance that separates great Barossa Shiraz from merely good examples.

While this Shiraz is drinking beautifully now with its rich dark fruit and coffee notes, it's built for the long haul with at least fifteen years of cellaring potential ahead. The wine's full-bodied structure, concentrated tannins, and balanced acidity provide the framework for extended ageing, during which the primary fruit flavours will evolve into more complex secondary and tertiary characteristics. For optimal enjoyment, consider drinking some bottles now to appreciate its youthful vigour, then cellar the remainder for 5-10 years when the tannins will have softened and additional savoury complexity will emerge.

The consistently high scores across multiple respected wine critics (95-98 points) reflect both the exceptional 2021 vintage conditions and the wine's technical excellence. Critics recognised the wine's remarkable balance between power and finesse, its genuine intensity without heaviness, and the seamless integration of oak with fruit. The 2021 vintage in the Barossa was particularly noteworthy for producing wines with concentrated flavours while retaining natural acidity, creating the kind of complete, age-worthy wines that critics celebrate.

This wine's rich, concentrated profile and coffee-like undertones make it perfect for robust dishes that can match its intensity. Think slow-cooked lamb shoulder with rosemary, aged beef steaks, or rich game meats like venison where the wine's tannin structure will complement the protein's texture. The chocolate and blackberry flavours also pair beautifully with dishes featuring earthy mushrooms, aged hard cheeses, or even dark chocolate desserts for those who enjoy wine with sweets.

The tiny 300-case production indicates this wine comes from a very small, carefully selected vineyard block where quality takes absolute priority over quantity. Small-batch winemaking allows for meticulous attention to detail at every stage, from hand-selecting the best grapes to precise fermentation control and individual barrel monitoring. This level of micro-management typically results in wines with greater complexity and character expression, as the winemaker can make decisions based on the specific needs of this particular batch rather than managing large-volume production.
