This is majestic Barossa shiraz, firing on all cylinders. One of the greatest wines from one of the greatest sub-regions in the country. Immediate allure for the impatient among us, decades of cellaring potential for those with monk-like discipline. Either way, you're winning. Power and restraint doing a perfectly choreographed dance.

Why do we love this wine?

The bouquet is immediately expressive yet refined - ripe blackberry, mulberry and black cherry woven together with freshly cracked black pepper, cedar, star anise and dark cocoa. Roasted coffee, graphite and a hint of violets add even more intrigue, suggesting this wine's got both grunt and grace in spades. Then the palate hits, and bloody hell, what a palate. Wave upon wave of concentrated, luxurious black fruits - blackberry compote, cassis, plum - tempered by savoury spice, cured meats and that classic graphite minerality. Dark chocolate, espresso bean and fine French oak bring texture and gravitas that make you sit up and pay attention. The tannins are supple yet authoritative, shaping everything into a defined, architectural frame that's built to last. This is commanding Barossa shiraz at its absolute finest. A total class act.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Maranaga Shiraz showcases the sophisticated side of Barossa, balancing the region's signature power with remarkable finesse. While many Barossa Shiraz wines can be overtly bold, this 2018 vintage demonstrates 'grunt and grace in spades' through its architectural tannin structure and complex layering of dark fruits with savoury elements. The graphite minerality and violet notes suggest cooler vineyard sites or careful winemaking that preserves elegance alongside the region's characteristic intensity.

With its supple yet authoritative tannin structure and concentrated fruit profile, this Shiraz is built for extended cellaring. The 2018 vintage is drinking beautifully now but should continue developing complexity for 15-20 years. The French oak integration and graphite minerality will become more pronounced with time, while the intense blackberry and cassis flavours will evolve into more tertiary characteristics like leather, tobacco, and earthy undertones that make aged Barossa Shiraz so compelling.

The wine's combination of rich black fruits, savoury spice, and cured meat characteristics makes it perfect for robust dishes that can match its intensity. Think slow-cooked lamb shoulder with rosemary, aged beef steaks, or game meats like venison. The graphite minerality and dark chocolate notes also complement hard cheeses beautifully, while the pepper and cedar elements work wonderfully with barbecued meats where the char can echo the wine's roasted coffee and cocoa complexity.

The 98-point Vino Masters and 97-point Wine Orbit scores reflect this wine's exceptional balance between power and elegance - a hallmark of truly great Shiraz. Critics likely recognised the seamless integration of complex aromatics (violets, star anise, graphite) with the concentrated palate, plus the sophisticated tannin management that creates structure without overwhelming the fruit. Single vineyard Shiraz from premium Barossa sites that achieve this level of complexity while maintaining regional character are increasingly rare and highly valued.

Single vineyard designations like Maranaga indicate fruit sourced from one specific site, allowing the unique terroir characteristics to shine through. This typically means more consistent flavour profiles and often superior quality compared to regional blends. The Maranaga site clearly produces fruit with distinctive graphite minerality and violet notes that set it apart from broader Barossa expressions, suggesting specific soil types, elevation, or microclimate factors that contribute to the wine's refined character and aging potential.
