This is majestic Barossa shiraz, firing on all cylinders. One of the greatest wines from one of the greatest sub-regions in the country. Immediate allure for the impatient among us, decades of cellaring potential for those with monk-like discipline. Either way, you're winning. Power and restraint doing a perfectly choreographed dance.

Why do we love this wine?

The bouquet is immediately expressive yet refined - ripe blackberry, mulberry and black cherry woven together with freshly cracked black pepper, cedar, star anise and dark cocoa. Roasted coffee, graphite and a hint of violets add even more intrigue, suggesting this wine's got both grunt and grace in spades. Then the palate hits, and bloody hell, what a palate. Wave upon wave of concentrated, luxurious black fruits - blackberry compote, cassis, plum - tempered by savoury spice, cured meats and that classic graphite minerality. Dark chocolate, espresso bean and fine French oak bring texture and gravitas that make you sit up and pay attention. The tannins are supple yet authoritative, shaping everything into a defined, architectural frame that's built to last. This is commanding Barossa shiraz at its absolute finest. A total class act.

Frequently Asked Questions

The exceptional 98-point rating from Vino Masters and 97 points from Wine Orbit reflect this wine's remarkable balance of power and finesse. Barossa Valley's warm climate and ancient soils create ideal conditions for Shiraz to develop intense fruit concentration while maintaining structural integrity. The Maranaga vineyard's specific terroir contributes to the wine's distinctive graphite minerality and complex spice profile that critics prize in premium Australian Shiraz.

This full-bodied Shiraz is built for extended cellaring, with supple yet authoritative tannins providing an architectural framework for long-term development. The 2018 vintage benefits from Barossa's excellent growing conditions, and wines of this calibre typically reach their peak after 8-12 years. The concentrated fruit, fine French oak integration, and mineral backbone suggest it will continue evolving beautifully through 2030 and beyond.

The wine's savoury spice profile and cured meat characteristics make it exceptional with grilled lamb, beef brisket, or aged hard cheeses. The dark chocolate and espresso notes complement rich, slow-cooked dishes like braised short ribs or venison. The graphite minerality and black pepper spice also pair beautifully with char-grilled vegetables and mushroom-based dishes, while the wine's structure can handle bold flavours like blue cheese or charcuterie.

Single vineyard wines like this Maranaga Shiraz represent the purest expression of a specific site's terroir and microclimate. Unlike blended wines from multiple vineyards, this designation ensures every grape comes from one carefully selected plot, allowing the unique soil composition, elevation, and aspect to shine through. This focused approach typically results in more distinctive character and complexity, explaining why single vineyard wines often command premium prices and critical acclaim.

The fine French oak adds texture and gravitas without overwhelming the fruit, contributing subtle vanilla, spice, and structural tannins that complement Shiraz's natural boldness. French oak is prized for its tight grain and elegant influence compared to American oak, allowing the wine's blackberry and mulberry fruit to remain prominent while adding layers of complexity. The oak integration suggests careful barrel selection and extended maturation, hallmarks of premium winemaking that justify the wine's critical recognition.
