This is classic d’Arenberg - playful name, serious wine. The old bloke in question? Shiraz from some of the estate’s oldest McLaren Vale vines. The three young blondes? Roussanne, Viognier and Marsanne - co-fermented with the shiraz for added perfume, spice and finesse. A Rhône-style blend with serious McLaren Vale swagger.

Why do we love this wine?

From d’Arenberg’s oldest shiraz vines and a splash of fragrant white Rhône varieties comes this bold, brooding blend. The 2018 ‘Old Bloke & the Three Young Blondes’ is all about dark fruit, regional spice, and earthy intrigue, with serious structure and a long, savoury finish. A wine of depth, texture and plenty of personality. Foot-trodden, basket-pressed, and raised in French oak with no fining or filtration, this is hands-on winemaking at its best. The 2018 vintage gave them low yields and concentrated fruit, and it shows - this wine is powerful, structured, and built to go the distance. Expect a big hit of spice on the nose, followed by blackcurrants, plum and a savoury, iodine-like edge. The palate’s rich and layered - dark berries, complex savouriness, dried herbs - all supported (and amplified) by chewy, mouth-coating tannins. This is one for the cellar, or for a big night in with bold food and bolder company.

Halliday Wine Companion

The shiraz is from the oldest (100+ year old) estate vines and crushed on top of roussanne, viognier and marsanne (1% each); matured in old French oak. Though modest in proportion, the trio of white Rhône grapes appears to have a softening effect, perhaps adding a lilt of floral fragrance? Perhaps. Either way, this is powerful expression equipped with some serious tannins, but there’s a relative levity and suppleness, too. Damson, blackberry pastille, dried black cherry, cacao nibs, brown cardamom, cassia, mace and clove. This is built to age with tannic drive, so time will be its ally, but all is proportionate and aligned, so a vigorous decant does the trick.
