For centuries, Château Lafite Rothschild has sat at the very pinnacle of Bordeaux - and of wine, full stop. The name alone commands reverence in every serious wine market on earth. And the 2019 is being celebrated as one of the most compelling releases in recent memory. 99 points. A drinking window stretching to 2069. And a paradox in the glass that makes even the most seasoned critics lose their composure.

Why do we love this wine?

94% cabernet sauvignon from one of Pauillac's most storied hillsides, harvested over three meticulous weeks in September and October. Deep garnet in the glass, with an aromatic complexity that builds and builds - baked black cherry, cassis, mocha, licorice, smoked meat and a whisper of Sichuan pepper. The palate is simultaneously ethereal and powerful - graceful, silky tannins of extraordinary finesse wrapped around a core of decadently ripe, smoky, layered fruit. The finish is, quite simply, epic. This is Lafite being paradoxically approachable and profoundly complex at the same time. Which, if you know Lafite, makes it one of the most exciting releases in years.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2019 vintage represents a rare convergence of perfect growing conditions and Lafite's legendary terroir, resulting in what critics are calling one of the most exciting releases in years. The extended harvest period from September to October allowed for optimal phenolic ripeness, while the vintage's natural balance has created a wine that's paradoxically both approachable in its youth and profoundly complex. This combination of accessibility and depth is unusual for Lafite, which typically requires decades to show its true character.

The dominance of Cabernet Sauvignon from Pauillac's storied hillsides gives this Lafite its structural backbone and age-worthy tannins, while the remaining 6% of complementary varietals adds complexity and roundness. This high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon is typical of exceptional Bordeaux vintages, where the variety achieves perfect ripeness and concentration. The result is a wine with the classic Lafite elegance but with more immediate fruit expression than usual, showcasing the variety's ability to be both powerful and graceful.

This describes Lafite's signature style where immense concentration and complexity are delivered with remarkable finesse and elegance rather than brute force. The 'ethereal' quality refers to the wine's silky, almost weightless texture despite its full body, while 'powerful' speaks to the intense flavour concentration and long finish. This balance is achieved through Lafite's unique terroir and winemaking philosophy, creating wines that can age gracefully for decades while maintaining their sophisticated, refined character throughout their evolution.

The remarkable consistency of scores from 97-99 points across respected critics like James Suckling, Wine Advocate, and Jeb Dunnuck indicates this vintage has achieved near-universal recognition for its exceptional quality. This level of critical consensus is rare and typically occurs when a wine perfectly expresses both its terroir and vintage character. The scores reflect not just the wine's current drinking pleasure, but its potential for long-term development, suggesting this 2019 will be remembered as one of Lafite's greatest modern vintages.

While this Lafite is described as paradoxically approachable, it will reward both immediate consumption and long-term cellaring strategies. For current drinking, decanting for 2-3 hours will help integrate the tannins and reveal the wine's aromatic complexity, while proper cellar storage will allow it to develop additional layers over 20-30 years. The wine's balance suggests it will evolve through distinct phases, from its current fruit-forward expression to developing more tertiary notes of leather, tobacco, and earth that define mature Bordeaux.
