La Borie’s Côtes-du-Rhône Villages is a caressing medium-full blend of syrah, grenache and mourvèdre sourced from vines over clay and stone. Macerated dark fruits drive the rich, creamy palate with minerality, with spice and chocolate as welcome complements. We reckon this one’s good to go now but has plenty of life ahead if you choose to let it age.

Why do we love this wine?

Château La Borie, one of the few domains in Côtes-du-Rhône bearing the name Château, was built in the 17th century. Since then, it has passed through several families and is under the care of the Margnat family today. Situated ten kilometres from the left bank of the Rhône river, the winery produces four wines from its 75 hectares of vines. The 2019 vintage, which scored Gold & 96 points at the DDWA, that we stocked previously proved incredibly popular with our mofos so we expect this 2020 vintage to be another back-to-back hit!

Frequently Asked Questions

The 'Villages' designation indicates this wine comes from one of the superior communes within the Côtes-du-Rhône region, which have stricter production standards and typically produce more concentrated, complex wines. These villages appellations represent only about 25% of total Côtes-du-Rhône production and must meet higher minimum alcohol levels and lower maximum yields. The result is a wine with greater depth, structure and ageing potential compared to the basic regional appellation.

Château La Borie's centuries-old legacy provides invaluable terroir knowledge passed down through generations, allowing the current Margnat family to understand precisely how their 75 hectares respond to different vintages and techniques. This historical continuity means they've identified the optimal vineyard sites and developed time-tested methods that honour traditional Rhône winemaking whilst incorporating modern precision. The estate's longevity also indicates exceptional terroir quality - vineyards don't survive four centuries without producing consistently excellent fruit.

Grenache thrives in the warm, Mediterranean climate of the southern Rhône, developing high sugar levels that translate to the wine's full-bodied character and generous alcohol content. The grape's naturally thick skins contribute to the rich colour and robust tannin structure, while its tendency to produce concentrated flavours of red berries and spices aligns perfectly with the raspberry, redcurrant and spice notes in this wine. When blended with traditional Rhône varieties, Grenache provides the backbone and power that defines the region's most celebrated reds.

The 'Estate Grown' designation combined with 90 points indicates complete control over the winemaking process from vine to bottle, ensuring consistent quality and authentic expression of the terroir. Estate-grown wines typically show better integration and complexity because the winemaker can harvest at optimal ripeness and handle the fruit with minimal transport stress. This score places the wine in the 'outstanding' category, suggesting it offers exceptional value and drinking pleasure that should appeal to both casual drinkers and serious wine enthusiasts.

Serve this Grenache blend at 16-18°C to allow the fruit flavours to shine while maintaining the wine's structure - too warm and the alcohol will dominate, too cool and you'll mute those beautiful raspberry and redcurrant notes. Decanting for 30-60 minutes will help integrate the spice elements and soften any youthful tannins, creating a more harmonious drinking experience. The wine's full-bodied nature makes it perfect for rich dishes like lamb tagine, beef bourguignon, or aged cheeses that complement rather than compete with its bold character.
