Brilliant Bordeaux doesn't have to cost a fortune. This is the proof. Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux sits on the right bank of the Gironde - classic Bordeaux country, where Merlot rules and the wines have a natural elegance and approachability that makes them genuinely hard to resist, even at a young age...

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

This one is predominantly merlot, with cabernet sauvignon, malbec and petit verdot rounding out a blend that punches well above its price tag. Wild strawberry, violet and warming spice on the nose - fragrant, inviting and classically Bordeaux. The palate is medium-bodied and well-structured, with fresh blackcurrant and red berry fruit, a pleasantly spiced finish and a refinement that feels far more serious than the price would suggest. This is the kind of Bordeaux you open on a Tuesday without guilt and finish before you've made a decision about dinner. It also happens to be brilliant alongside a good piece of beef or anything slow-cooked and worthy of the compliment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux sits on the Right Bank of the Gironde estuary, where clay-limestone soils produce more approachable, fruit-forward wines compared to the gravelly Left Bank's structured Cabernet Sauvignon blends. This terroir allows for earlier drinking while still maintaining Bordeaux's classic elegance. The region's maritime climate moderates temperatures, creating ideal conditions for balanced ripening of Cabernet blends.

The 2024 vintage represents the very latest expression of this estate's winemaking, showcasing modern techniques applied to traditional Bordeaux varietals. Recent vintages in Bordeaux have benefited from improved vineyard management and selective harvesting. This wine's full-bodied nature and 95-point Decanter rating suggest exceptional fruit concentration and balance achieved in this contemporary vintage.

The wine's blackberry fruit and cedar notes create perfect harmony with grilled lamb or beef, where the meat's richness matches the wine's full body while cedar undertones complement herb crusts or wood-fired cooking. Rich game dishes like venison or duck confit also pair beautifully, as the plum characteristics bridge the gap between the wine's fruit and the meat's earthiness. Aged hard cheeses bring out the wine's structural complexity.

A 95-point Decanter rating indicates exceptional quality, placing this wine among the top tier of Bordeaux releases. This score likely reflects the wine's perfect balance between its full-bodied structure and elegant fruit expression, combined with the complexity that Cabernet blends can achieve when crafted expertly. The rating suggests outstanding vineyard site selection and meticulous winemaking that maximises the potential of the Blaye terroir.

Store this wine in a cool, dark environment at 12-15°C with consistent humidity to preserve its full-bodied character and allow the cedar and fruit elements to integrate further. While approachable now given its fruit-forward Blaye style, the wine's structure suggests it will develop additional complexity over 5-8 years. Decant for 30-60 minutes before serving to fully express the blackberry and plum characteristics alongside the cedar undertones.
