Ripe, plush, juicy and ready to go - this is a shiraz that brings something for everyone. Vibrant fruit, regional spice and a chocolatey oak back bone puts little wonder in the drinker's mind - this is McLaren Vale shiraz and ripper McV shiraz at that.

Why do we love this wine?

Chalk Hill are a McLaren Vale institution. Boasting a 5 Star Halliday rating and a stable of wines that'd make some of the world's best very jealous. James Halliday described them as “An outstanding winery regularly producing wines of exemplary quality and typicity”, and this wine certainly fits that description. Lifted aromatics of blood plums, red cherries and flowering herbs open up to a full-bodied palate of chocolate, blackcurrant and various red and black fruits. There's a fine tannin and lingering spice on the finish to make this a wine for almost any meal. Yep, you guessed it, this is an extra McLaren Vale-y McLaren Vale shiraz.

Frequently Asked Questions

McLaren Vale Shiraz is renowned for its rich, opulent character shaped by the region's warm Mediterranean climate and diverse soils. This Wits End Vineyard expression showcases the area's signature full-bodied style with concentrated dark fruit flavours, chocolate notes, and well-integrated spice. The region's proximity to the ocean moderates temperatures just enough to retain freshness while allowing for optimal ripening, creating the perfect balance of power and elegance that McLaren Vale Shiraz is famous for worldwide.

Single vineyard wines like this Wits End Vineyard Shiraz offer a pure expression of terroir that blended wines simply cannot achieve. By sourcing grapes from one specific site, the winemaker can showcase the unique soil composition, microclimate, and aspect of that particular location. This focused approach typically results in greater complexity, distinctive character, and a more authentic sense of place. Estate grown fruit also means complete control over viticultural practices, from pruning to harvest timing, ensuring optimal grape quality.

James Halliday's 5 Star rating represents the pinnacle of Australian wine excellence, awarded to fewer than 3% of wineries nationwide. This prestigious rating indicates consistent production of wines scoring 95+ points, exceptional winemaking standards, and outstanding vineyard management. Halliday specifically praised Chalk Hill as producing wines of 'exemplary quality and typicity', meaning they not only achieve technical excellence but also perfectly represent their regional character and varietal expression.

The wine's rich chocolate and blackcurrant flavours, combined with fine tannins and lingering spice, make it incredibly food-friendly. Classic pairings include grilled red meats, lamb with rosemary, or aged hard cheeses where the wine's structure complements rich, savoury flavours. The spice notes also work beautifully with barbecued dishes or hearty stews. The full-bodied nature means it won't be overwhelmed by bold flavours, while the fine tannin structure provides enough grip to cut through fatty foods.

The 2022 vintage shows excellent structure with fine tannins and concentrated fruit that suggests good ageing potential. McLaren Vale Shiraz typically develops beautifully over 8-12 years, with the primary fruit flavours evolving into more complex secondary notes of leather, earth, and dried herbs. The chocolate and spice elements will integrate further, while the tannins will soften and become more silky. However, the wine's immediate appeal and balance mean it's equally enjoyable now for those who prefer younger, fruit-forward expressions.
