Why do we love this wine?

We get what the fuss is about, this is impressive wine that straddles rugged rusticity with poise and purpose. Concentrated, dense red and black fruit cake the mouth in a pleasing, friendly and full way - the wine’s quite broad on the palate. The fruits in a developed space - think very ripe or dried rather than jammy and unctuous. Grippy tannins and bright acidity grapple the gums giving it structure and shape. Fruit leather and berry seeds mix with black currant and cassis. This is a classic Rhone blend, each varietal influencing the wine purposefully. Harmonious and well balanced. The finish is lasting and complete - stunning wine.

Soft, ripe black forest compote nose; nice concentration of fruit on the palate. Good weight. Really well balanced in terms of fruit, acidity and tannin; supple and silky. Lots of juicy, succulent blackberry fruit flavours. Superb length. Some nice complexity coming through too. Dangerously drinkable! Impressive.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Cave de Cairanne showcases the unique terroir of Cairanne, a village appellation within Côtes du Rhône Villages known for producing more structured wines than basic Côtes du Rhône. The blend demonstrates exceptional concentration and complexity, with each varietal contributing purposefully to create a harmonious whole. The wine's ability to balance rugged rusticity with elegant poise reflects the skilled winemaking traditions of this cooperative, which has been crafting wines since 1929.

The 96 points from Decanter World Wine Awards 2022 and Gold medal recognition reflect this wine's exceptional quality and typicity. Critics are praising its perfect balance of concentrated fruit, structured tannins, and bright acidity - hallmarks of premium Rhône Valley winemaking. The wine demonstrates remarkable harmony between power and finesse, with developed fruit characters that show complexity without being overripe or jammy, exactly what judges look for in world-class Grenache blends.

This wine's grippy tannins and savoury profile make it ideal for rich, hearty dishes that can match its intensity. Think slow-braised lamb with herbs de Provence, grilled ribeye with rosemary, or cassoulet - the wine's blackcurrant and spice notes complement gamey flavours beautifully. The textured, savoury style also pairs wonderfully with aged hard cheeses or charcuterie, where the wine's structure can cut through rich fats while its fruit complexity enhances umami flavours.

Store this bottle on its side in a cool, dark place at 12-15°C to preserve its complex fruit and tannin structure. Serve at 16-18°C to allow the full spectrum of blackberry, plum, and spice flavours to express themselves properly. Consider decanting for 30-60 minutes before serving to soften the grippy tannins and allow the wine's harmonious blend to fully integrate, especially given its concentrated, dense character.

With its excellent structure, bright acidity, and concentrated fruit profile, this wine has strong ageing potential of 8-12 years from vintage. The grippy tannins will gradually soften while the developed fruit characters evolve into more complex tertiary flavours like leather, earth, and dried herbs. However, it's already drinking beautifully now, showing the perfect balance that makes great Rhône Valley wines so versatile - enjoyable young for their vibrant fruit or cellared for added complexity.
