This is a remarkable wine. I have been lucky enough to taste through a few vintages of these museum releases, and they are all completely mesmerising. The 2009 is a once in a lifetime drinking experience.

Why do we love this wine?

2009 was a low yielding vintage. What was harvested, though, was of the highest quality. The resulting wines are dually scarce and exceptional. This is powerful and driving. A true celebration of deep, rich black and blue fruit. It is weighty in the glass with real gravitas - commanding of your attention and your time. As it opens up it delivers aromatics across all spectrums, florals, meats, wild berries, umami, earth... it goes on and on, as does the wine. The finish is long and marked by still peppy acidity combined with grainy (and somehow youthful) tannin. Ethereal and enigmatic - a truly special museum release. If you are a lover of the aged and rare (as I am), I implore you: buy this wine.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2009 vintage was exceptionally low-yielding, meaning fewer grapes were produced but those that survived created wines of extraordinary quality. After 15 years of careful cellaring, this wine has developed the complex secondary and tertiary characteristics that only come with proper ageing - transforming from simple fruit flavours into a symphony of florals, earth, umami, and wild berries that define a true museum piece.

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and diverse soils create ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, producing wines with intense concentration and distinctive regional character. The area's warm days and cool sea breezes help retain acidity while developing rich fruit flavours, which explains this wine's combination of power and elegance, plus those characteristic earthy and cedar notes that McLaren Vale Cabernets are renowned for.

Despite being 15 years old, this wine retains 'grainy and somehow youthful' tannins, which is remarkable for aged Cabernet Sauvignon. This suggests exceptional fruit quality and winemaking, as the tannins have softened enough to integrate beautifully while maintaining enough structure to support the wine's full body and provide that commanding presence in the glass.

This wine demands patience and attention - decant it for at least an hour to allow the complex aromatics to fully express themselves. As it opens, you'll experience waves of different characteristics from black fruits to florals, meats, and earth. The long finish with peppy acidity means each sip evolves, so take your time between tastes to appreciate how the wine continues to develop in the glass.

A 95-point score from James Halliday represents wine of exceptional quality - in the top tier of Australian wines. Combined with recognition from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate and the Five Red Star winery rating, this indicates not just a great wine, but one from a consistently outstanding producer. These scores validate what the tasting notes suggest: this is a rare, museum-quality wine that represents Australian Cabernet at its finest.
