Why do we love this wine?

This South Aussie producer is fast becoming a mofo favourite across their delicious red and white wines. They seek out parcels of quality grapes in Barossa, McLaren and the maritime region of Langhorne Creek. Their wines are made to a high standard across the range and are reliably delicious. This cabernet shows off a perfumed nose of flowers, juicy plums and dried herbs, followed by a medium-bodied, ripe and textured palate. There’s a gentle earthiness in the wine that is wrapped in blackberries and a lingering olive tapenade finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2023 vintage showcases exceptional balance between power and elegance, with Thistledown sourcing premium grapes from multiple South Australian regions including Barossa, McLaren Vale, and the cooler maritime climate of Langhorne Creek. This multi-regional blending approach creates complexity while the recent vintage ensures vibrant fruit expression and fresh acidity that will continue developing over the next 5-7 years.

Langhorne Creek's proximity to Lake Alexandrina creates cooling breezes that extend the growing season, allowing grapes to develop intense flavours while retaining natural acidity. This maritime influence contributes to the wine's distinctive olive tapenade finish and gentle earthiness, balancing the richer Barossa fruit components. The result is a more structured, food-friendly Cabernet with enhanced aging potential.

The wine's blackberry richness and olive tapenade finish make it perfect for Mediterranean-inspired dishes like herb-crusted lamb, beef with rosemary, or aged hard cheeses. The gentle earthiness complements mushroom-based dishes beautifully, while the structured tannins can handle grilled meats and hearty pasta with rich tomato-based sauces.

James Halliday's five red star rating represents the highest tier of Australian wineries, awarded to producers demonstrating exceptional quality and consistency across their entire range. Thistledown earned this prestigious recognition through their meticulous grape sourcing, skilled winemaking, and ability to consistently produce wines that over-deliver on quality relative to price point, making them a standout in South Australia's competitive wine landscape.

Store bottles on their side in a cool, dark place at 12-15°C to preserve the wine's structure and allow proper development. Serve at 16-18°C after decanting for 30-60 minutes to allow the full-bodied tannins to soften and the complex aromatics to fully express. While delicious now, this wine will continue improving for 3-5 years, developing more integrated flavours and smoother texture.
