You're going to know this producer, they're one of the greats... These grapes, grown in the world-renowned terra rossa soils of Coonawarra, have all the classic flavours you’d expect, and then some! Cassis and eucalypt define the palate, with the potential for a great many years ageing - if you can be bothered! We're loving ours just how it is right now.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

These guys were established in 1908 - a pioneering winery of Coonawarra. Still family owned, they pride themselves on the amazing wines they’re making today with the benefit of four generations of know-how. This 2022 release lands with intent - all blackcurrant depth, graphite edge and a cool flicker of that minty, eucalypt that helps define the region. There’s structure here, but also grace: tight, fine tannins wrapping around a juicy, perfectly ripened core. French oak plays its part quietly, adding texture and shape without stealing the spotlight. When should you drink this wine? Every, damn, day!

Frequently Asked Questions

Coonawarra's famous terra rossa soil over limestone creates the perfect conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, producing wines with exceptional structure and that signature minty, eucalyptus character. This 2022 vintage showcases these regional hallmarks beautifully, with the cool climate allowing for slow ripening that develops complex blackcurrant flavours while maintaining natural acidity. The graphite minerality you'll taste comes directly from this unique terroir, making Coonawarra one of Australia's most celebrated Cabernet regions.

The French oak in this Cabernet plays a supporting role rather than dominating the fruit, which is the hallmark of skilled winemaking. It adds subtle texture and structural backbone without overwhelming the wine's natural blackcurrant and graphite flavours. French oak typically imparts finer, more integrated tannins compared to American oak, contributing to the wine's elegant mouthfeel and helping to frame the fruit rather than mask it. This restrained approach allows the Coonawarra terroir to shine through while adding complexity.

A 95-point rating from Wine Pilot indicates exceptional quality, placing this wine in the top tier of Australian Cabernets. Scores in the 95-100 range are reserved for wines that demonstrate outstanding complexity, balance, and regional character. Combined with the Halliday Special Value Award, this suggests you're getting premium wine quality at an accessible price point. The Five Star Halliday Winery rating also confirms the producer's consistent excellence across their entire range, not just this single wine.

While this wine is delicious now with its juicy, perfectly ripened core, Coonawarra Cabernets are renowned for their aging potential due to their natural acidity and tannin structure. The tight, fine tannins and graphite minerality suggest this wine will develop beautifully over 8-12 years, gaining complexity and softening in texture. However, the winemaker's suggestion to 'drink every damn day' indicates it's crafted for both immediate enjoyment and medium-term cellaring, giving you flexibility in when to open it.

The medium-bodied structure and blackcurrant-graphite profile make this Cabernet incredibly food-friendly, particularly with red meats and aged cheeses. The wine's fine tannins won't overpower dishes like lamb with rosemary or beef with mushrooms, while the cedar and black olive notes complement Mediterranean flavours beautifully. The eucalyptus character also pairs wonderfully with game meats or herb-crusted proteins, and the wine's balanced acidity cuts through rich, fatty dishes without losing its fruit character.
