There isn't a whole lot of cabernet planted up in the hills above Barossa - there's just not that much space - but gee whiz are we glad they made some space for these plantings. Approachable now but, rich, robust and ready to age for 10-15 years easily. Barossa cab fans would be spittin' chips to miss out on this one.

Why do we love this wine?

There's been a fair bit of debate about this wine at Vinomofo. It all comes down to a very simple question, should this wine be drunk now, or laid down. Well there's a pretty good argument for both. Right now, it's drinking beautifully, there's no debate about, deeply varietal with cassis, dried herbs, even a hint of eucalypt. In about a decade however, this wine will settle, soften and the blend of French and American oak (a good portion of it brand new) will really start to do some of the heavy lifting. It's a bit of a quandary, but we think we've come up with a solution. Por che no los dos? 3 in the cellar, 3 in the rack, you can't go wrong. This way, you'll get all the beautiful fruit, lively acid and normal cabernet notes for now, whilst getting to see what, if back vintage stock is anything to go by, will surely develop into a whole different beast. A great wine for a great price.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine showcases the classic duality of premium Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon - it's currently expressing beautiful varietal character with cassis and dried herbs, making it delicious now. However, the combination of French and American oak (much of it new) provides the structural backbone needed for extended cellaring. Over the next decade, these tannins will soften and integrate, allowing the oak to contribute more complexity while the fruit evolves into deeper, more nuanced flavours.

The Barossa Valley's warm continental climate and ancient soils create ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, producing wines with intense fruit concentration and full body. This terroir contributes to the wine's rich palate weight and the distinctive eucalyptus notes mentioned in the tasting profile. The region's reputation for premium reds is reflected in Kyara's boutique approach, focusing on single vineyard expressions that capture the essence of this renowned wine region.

The wine's earthy, plum and raspberry flavours, combined with its full-bodied structure, make it perfect for rich, protein-heavy dishes. Think grilled lamb with rosemary, aged beef steaks, or hearty game meats that can stand up to the wine's intensity. The oak influence and tannin structure also complement dishes with umami depth like mushroom-based sauces or aged cheeses, creating harmonious flavour bridges.

The blend of French and American oak barrels creates a complex flavour foundation - French oak typically adds subtle spice and structural elegance, while American oak contributes vanilla and coconut notes. With a significant portion being new oak, the wine currently shows restrained wood influence that will integrate beautifully over time. This oak program is designed to enhance rather than mask the varietal character, supporting the wine's aging potential.

The 2022 vintage represents a wine at the beginning of its drinking window, showing primary fruit characteristics alongside emerging complexity. Most premium Cabernet Sauvignons benefit from 5-10 years of cellaring to reach full potential, and this wine follows that trajectory. The current lively acidity and fresh fruit expression will gradually evolve into more integrated, secondary flavours of leather, tobacco, and developed berry notes as it matures.
