Moss Wood is as synonymous with Margaret River as cabernet is, and what a cracking example we have on display here, with endless tasting notes to think of; cedar, cassis, liquorice, tar, violets and earth. We could go on and on.

Why do we love this wine?

A long and slow growing season during a cooler vintage has allowed the team at Moss Wood to craft a wine with immense concentration and structure that will require a long lay down in a cellar. You can expect it to just be hitting strides in 15 years, with the ability to lay down for up to 40. Such is the beauty and power of cab sauv (with a dollop of cabernet franc and petit verdot) in the hands of masters. Every critic worth their salt is raving about this vintage, this estate and this wine. This is a wine to buy up on and thank yourself down the track. You'll be the hero at any dinner party and ensure you are always the first to be invited back.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2022 vintage benefited from a uniquely cool and extended growing season that allowed the grapes to develop exceptional concentration while maintaining natural acidity. This slower ripening process enabled Moss Wood's winemakers to achieve remarkable balance between power and elegance. The cooler conditions also preserved the wine's aromatic complexity, resulting in the layered mulberry, spice, and tobacco notes that critics are praising with scores of 96-98 points across the board.

Margaret River's maritime climate provides the perfect conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, with warm days moderated by cooling ocean breezes that extend the ripening period. The region's gravelly soils offer excellent drainage while retaining enough moisture for consistent vine growth. This combination allows varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot to develop the intense flavours and structured tannins that make Margaret River reds comparable to the world's finest Bordeaux-style wines.

Store this wine in a cool, dark place at 12-15°C with consistent humidity around 70% to preserve the cork's integrity. The wine's immense structure and concentration mean it will continue developing complexity for decades - expect it to hit its stride around 2037 and maintain peak drinking until 2062. Proper cellaring will allow the tannins to soften gradually while the mulberry fruit integrates with developing tertiary flavours of leather, cedar, and earthy complexity.

This wine's rich tannin structure and spice notes make it perfect for slow-cooked red meats like braised beef short ribs or lamb shanks with rosemary. The tobacco and earthy undertones also pair beautifully with aged hard cheeses and mushroom-based dishes. For special occasions, try it with dry-aged steaks or game meats where the wine's power can match the intensity of the protein without overwhelming more delicate flavours.

While Cabernet Sauvignon forms the backbone, the addition of Cabernet Franc contributes aromatic lift and herbaceous complexity that adds elegance to the wine's structure. Petit Verdot, though used sparingly, provides intense colour, additional tannins, and spicy notes that enhance the wine's aging potential. This classic Bordeaux-style blending approach allows Moss Wood to create a more complex and age-worthy wine than single-varietal Cabernet Sauvignon alone could achieve.
