This isn't just any cabernet. This is as good as it gets. Australia's most revered flagship wine, made only in exceptional years from less than 1% of this world-famous producer's finest terra rossa fruit. Since 1982, this wine has defined what premium Australian cabernet should be. And the 2019 might just be the best vintage yet - 97/98/99pts across the board.

Why do we love this wine?

So what makes this 2021 release so special? Literally perfect vintage conditions created a "brightly lit" cabernet that flows with elegant restraint. The lifted nose has a gorgeous violet perfume, bright red and dark cherries, with brooding undertones of chestnut and bitter dark chocolate. The palate delivers vivid red and black forest berries in a classical full-bodied frame, extending with great persistence to a long finish marked by sandalwood and finely detailed tannins. The critics are unanimous: 99pts Huon Hooke. 98pts Jeni Port. 98pts Ray Jordan. 98pts Shanteh Wale... you get the idea. This is the real deal. Ready to drink now but built to age gracefully until 2050 or so. Whether you're opening it for life's biggest celebrations or laying it down for future generations, this is Australian wine history in a bottle.

Frequently Asked Questions

On the nose, expect a lifted violet perfume alongside bright red and dark cherries, with brooding undertones of chestnut and bitter dark chocolate. The palate is classically full-bodied, delivering vivid red and black forest berries that extend to a long finish with sandalwood and finely detailed tannins. This profile is a textbook expression of great Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon, where the region's famous terra rossa soils over limestone lend that distinctive elegance and structural precision.

The 2021 vintage in Coonawarra produced near-perfect growing conditions, resulting in fruit with exceptional concentration and natural balance. Critics including Huon Hooke (99pts), Jeni Port, Ray Jordan, Shanteh Wale, and Tyson Stelzer (all 98pts) were unanimous in their praise, which is genuinely rare across such a diverse panel of palates. When multiple respected critics independently converge on scores this high, it typically signals a wine that transcends regional benchmarks and enters the conversation of all-time Australian greats.

This wine is drinking beautifully right now, with its fruit forward and tannins already finely detailed rather than grippy or austere. However, its structure and the quality of the 2021 vintage mean it is genuinely built for the long haul, with a cellaring window extending to around 2050. Great Coonawarra Cabernet is well known for developing extraordinary complexity over decades, often evolving from vibrant berry fruit into savoury cedar, earth, and dried herb characters as it matures in bottle.

A full-bodied Coonawarra Cabernet like this is a natural partner for red meats - think slow-roasted lamb shoulder, a well-aged ribeye, or a rich beef bourguignon. The wine's firm but fine tannins act as a palate cleanser against fatty proteins, while its dark fruit and chocolate notes complement savoury, umami-rich sauces. Hard aged cheeses such as a good Australian cheddar or pecorino also work wonderfully if you are looking for a non-meat option.

Coonawarra is one of Australia's most celebrated wine regions, and its reputation rests almost entirely on a narrow strip of terra rossa soil - a vivid red loam sitting directly over porous limestone. This unique combination provides excellent drainage, forcing vine roots deep to find water and nutrients, which naturally limits yields and concentrates flavour. The region's cool maritime-influenced climate also allows Cabernet Sauvignon to ripen slowly and evenly, preserving the bright acidity and fine tannin structure that give Coonawarra Cabernet its signature elegance and remarkable ageing potential.
