The name on the label carries even more weight than the cabernet in the bottle

If that was even possible...

This isn’t just another Coonawarra cabernet - it’s the real deal. The 2021 vintage was one for the ages - low-yield and high-quality - which means the fruit that made it into this bottle is the best of the best. And you can taste it. There's a reason this producer's name carries so much weight...

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

This is a cabernet that walks tall - dark, deep and built to impress now or age gracefully for a decade if you can resist. Blackcurrant, boysenberry and mulberry flavours roll in thick and fast, layered with cedar, tobacco and that leafy, earthy Coonawarra signature. The oak - French, naturally - a mix of new and seasoned hogsheads that’s added polish without drowning the fruit. But the real magic here is the tannin. Fine, dry and commanding - it grips just enough to let you know this wine’s got structure but not so much that you need a glass of water to get it down. It’s assertive, yes, but beautifully balanced by the lushness of the fruit and the freshness of the acid. Everything’s in sync. A wonderful wine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Coonawarra's famous terra rossa soil - a thin strip of red earth over limestone - creates that signature leafy, earthy character you'll find in this wine. The cool climate allows Cabernet Sauvignon to ripen slowly, developing complex blackcurrant flavours while retaining natural acidity. This region is often called Australia's Bordeaux for good reason - it produces some of the country's most elegant and age-worthy Cabernets.

With its commanding tannin structure and excellent balance, this wine is built for the long haul - easily a decade or more. The French oak integration and natural acidity will help preserve the fruit flavours as they evolve into more complex tertiary notes. However, it's also drinking beautifully now if you prefer the vibrant primary fruit character of a younger Cabernet.

The wine's robust tannins and rich fruit profile make it perfect for red meat dishes - think grilled ribeye, lamb shanks, or aged beef. The cedar and tobacco notes complement char-grilled flavours beautifully, while the wine's structure can stand up to rich sauces and strong cheeses. Even hearty vegetarian dishes like mushroom risotto or eggplant parmigiana would work well.

Different wine critics focus on various aspects when scoring - Halliday might emphasise regional typicity and ageing potential, while Winestate could prioritise current drinking pleasure and balance. Both scores in the mid-90s indicate exceptional quality, suggesting this producer has crafted a Cabernet that excels across multiple criteria. The 'Iconic Producer' designation further confirms this winery's established reputation for premium wines.

Absolutely - decanting will help soften those fine, dry tannins and allow the complex aromatics to fully express themselves. Give it at least an hour in the decanter to let the blackcurrant and mulberry flavours integrate with the cedar and tobacco notes. Young, structured Cabernets like this often benefit from aeration, which helps the oak marry with the fruit and reveals the wine's full potential.
