Why do we love this wine?

When we have this producer at the tasting bench, you can be sure there's a few of us salivating over the wines. This cabernet is always an absolute standout, and we all nod in agreement that this has to be one of the best value cabernets we've ever sold. Ever. An extroverted red which refuses to back down, this wine is fragrant with dark forest fruits seducing the nose, while traces of mint and cedar oak add a twist of regional character. A torrent of ripe plum, dark berry and blackcurrant make their presence known on the palate -  clearly dominating but steering clear of overwhelming the tastebuds. The finish is superb with great length and a dry finale. An outstanding example of how to balance power with restraint, and succeed - this magnificent cab shows others how it’s done.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine has earned exceptional scores of 96 points from three respected critics, reflecting Coonawarra's reputation as Australia's premier cabernet sauvignon region. The cool climate and famous terra rossa soil of Coonawarra produce cabernets with distinctive mint and eucalyptus characters, which shine through in this wine's cedar oak and mint notes. The region's ability to maintain natural acidity while achieving full ripeness creates the perfect balance of power and restraint that critics consistently praise.

Serve this cabernet at 16-18°C to allow its complex dark fruit flavours and oak integration to fully express themselves. The wine's rich plum and blackcurrant profile makes it an ideal match for red meat dishes like grilled lamb, beef steaks, or slow-cooked casseroles. The mint and cedar oak characteristics also complement herb-crusted roasts beautifully, while the wine's structure can stand up to aged cheeses and dark chocolate desserts.

While this 2021 cabernet is already showing beautifully with its expressive dark fruit character and excellent length, premium Coonawarra cabernets typically develop additional complexity over 5-10 years. The wine's full-bodied structure and quality oak suggest it will reward cellaring, developing more integrated tannins and tertiary flavours. However, given its current balance and the critics' enthusiasm, it's equally enjoyable now for those who prefer fruit-forward expressions.

Black Market Deals typically indicate exceptional value wines where the producer's identity is kept confidential to protect their regular pricing structure. This allows wine retailers to offer premium quality wines at significantly reduced prices without affecting the producer's brand positioning. Given the multiple 96-point ratings and Five Star Halliday winery status, this represents access to what would normally be a much more expensive, highly sought-after Coonawarra cabernet.

The chocolate notes in this cabernet likely come from the interaction between ripe fruit and quality oak maturation, creating rich, dark cocoa undertones that complement the primary blackcurrant and plum flavours. The cherry characteristics add brightness and lift to the wine's profile, preventing the full-bodied nature from becoming too heavy. These flavours work together with the mint notes - a classic Coonawarra signature - to create the complex, layered palate that has impressed critics and earned this wine its outstanding ratings.
