Why do we love this wine?

Wanna look the part of a big-time baller without taking out a second mortgage? This might just be the wine to have on hand at your next fancy dinner party. A big, heavy bottle, wax-dipped cork and beautiful label are only the beginning. As it should be, what truly matters is what’s inside. And here that means stunning cabernet. Hand-harvested fruit spends 14 months in a mix of new and seasoned French oak before going into bottle, representing the top wine from our Black Market producer. The finer details are all there, including minerality, cigar box, blackberry, cocoa and plum. There’s layer after layer on both the nose and palate. Drink this, and you’ll feel luxurious inside and out.

What is a Black Market deal?

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.

Frequently Asked Questions

Margaret River's unique maritime climate and gravelly soils create ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, producing wines with exceptional structure and complexity. This region consistently delivers cabernets with distinctive minerality and elegant tannins, which you'll find beautifully expressed in this 2021 vintage. The 14-month French oak maturation enhances these regional characteristics, creating layers of blackcurrant, cedar, and spice that showcase why Margaret River is considered Australia's premium cabernet region.

This medium-bodied cabernet is drinking beautifully now but has excellent cellaring potential for 8-12 years. The combination of quality fruit, French oak maturation, and Margaret River's natural acidity provides the backbone for graceful aging. If drinking now, decant for 30-60 minutes to allow the cedar and spice notes to fully develop, or cellar until 2028-2032 when the tannins will soften and the complex flavours will integrate even further.

The wine's medium body and cedar-spice profile make it incredibly versatile with food. Classic pairings include grilled lamb with rosemary, aged beef steaks, or hard cheeses like aged cheddar. The blackcurrant and cocoa notes also complement game meats beautifully, while the French oak influence pairs wonderfully with mushroom-based dishes or anything cooked over charcoal that echoes the wine's smoky, mineral complexity.

Black Market deals allow premium wineries to offer their top-tier wines at exceptional value without affecting their regular retail pricing structure. This represents the producer's flagship cabernet - their best fruit, longest oak maturation, and most careful winemaking - but at a fraction of the usual cost. The mystery element protects the winery's brand positioning while giving wine lovers access to Five Star Halliday rated quality that would typically cost significantly more.

The extended French oak aging in both new and seasoned barrels adds remarkable complexity without overwhelming the fruit character. New oak contributes vanilla, spice, and structural tannins, while seasoned oak allows the wine's natural minerality and blackcurrant flavours to shine through. This careful balance creates the cigar box and cocoa notes mentioned, while the extended maturation period ensures the oak is fully integrated rather than sitting on top of the wine, resulting in a seamless, sophisticated final product.
