Wines like this don’t come along often, ones that prolong time and inspire you to contemplate. The good news is that at 5 years old, this wine is drinking superbly. The great news is that it has at least a decade of prime drinking ahead of it.

Why do we love this wine?

Complex, harmonious and elegant, this is a beautiful tribute to Coonawarra. Bestowed with a 4.1 Vivino rating (at time of writing) and made by one of the region’s most beloved wineries, it comes as no surprise that the identity of this distinctive red needs to be concealed - especially at this price. A symphony of juicy plum, blackcurrant, bay leaf and eucalypt combine with dense fruit cake and dark chocolate, leading to a plush and lingering crescendo.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine has earned multiple accolades including a Halliday Special Value Award and 'Dangerous Value' rating, indicating it punches well above its price point. The anonymous nature of this Marathon Deal suggests it's from a premium Coonawarra producer who typically commands higher prices. Coonawarra's terra rossa soil and cool climate create ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, producing wines with exceptional structure and ageing potential that rival much more expensive bottles.

Coonawarra's famous terra rossa soil - a thin strip of iron-rich red earth over limestone - creates unique growing conditions that produce Cabernet Sauvignon with exceptional elegance and complexity. The region's cool maritime climate allows for slow, even ripening, resulting in wines with intense colour, structured tannins, and the distinctive eucalyptus and bay leaf notes found in this bottle. This terroir combination is why Coonawarra is often called Australia's answer to Bordeaux's Left Bank.

Serve this wine at 16-18°C to showcase its complex aromatics and full-bodied structure. The rich plum and blackcurrant flavours, combined with dark chocolate notes, make it perfect for red meat dishes like grilled lamb, beef steaks, or slow-cooked casseroles. The wine's eucalyptus and bay leaf characteristics also complement herb-crusted roasts beautifully. Decant for 30-60 minutes before serving to allow the wine to open up and reveal its full complexity.

A 4.1 Vivino rating places this wine in the 'very good' to 'excellent' category, representing the collective opinion of thousands of wine drinkers worldwide. This rating is particularly impressive for a value-priced wine, as Vivino users often rate based on price-to-quality ratio. The fact that this anonymous Coonawarra Cabernet maintains such a high rating across all vintages suggests consistent winemaking excellence and reinforces why the producer's identity needs to remain concealed at this price point.

This wine is beautifully balanced for immediate enjoyment, showing harmonious integration of fruit, tannins, and oak. However, quality Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon like this typically has excellent cellaring potential of 8-15 years. The 2020 vintage benefited from ideal growing conditions, and the wine's full-bodied structure and complex flavour profile suggest it will develop additional tertiary characters like cedar, tobacco, and leather with proper cellaring. If storing, keep bottles on their side in a cool, dark place at consistent temperature.
