Why do we love this wine?

This family winery have been landowners in Coonawarra for over 100 years. They are Coonawarra experts and the jewel in their crown is, of course, cabernet sauvignon. Their wines consistently score highly with critics and this 2020 cellar release is a showcase of a deep understanding of the land and masterstroke winemaking.

The blackberry fruit concentration is immense and elevated by fine, dancing tannin. It wouldn't be Coonawarra without the marriage of mint and tobacco, rounding out mouth-feel and driving complexity. This is fantastic drinking now and will age gracefully for another decade.

Frequently Asked Questions

Coonawarra's unique terra rossa soil over limestone creates ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, producing wines with distinctive mint and eucalyptus characteristics alongside concentrated blackcurrant fruit. The region's cool climate allows for extended ripening, developing complex tannin structures that give the wine its renowned elegance and ageing potential. This family winery's century-long connection to the land demonstrates the deep understanding required to craft exceptional Coonawarra Cabernet.

This wine is designed for both immediate enjoyment and long-term cellaring, with the producer suggesting it will age gracefully for another decade from release. The full-bodied structure, fine tannins, and concentrated fruit provide the backbone necessary for extended ageing. As it matures, expect the primary blackcurrant flavours to evolve into more complex secondary characteristics while the tannins soften and integrate further.

The wine's rich blackcurrant concentration and cocoa notes make it perfect for red meat dishes, particularly grilled or roasted beef and lamb. The allspice characteristics complement game meats beautifully, while the full-bodied structure can stand up to rich, flavourful cheeses like aged cheddar or blue cheese. The fine tannin structure also pairs excellently with dishes featuring herbs and earthy flavours that echo Coonawarra's signature mint and tobacco notes.

The multiple 94-95 point scores from respected critics like James Halliday and Ray Jordan reflect the wine's exceptional balance of concentration and finesse. Critics particularly value the marriage of intense blackberry fruit with Coonawarra's signature mint and tobacco complexity, showcasing both regional typicity and winemaking excellence. The consistent high scoring across different publications indicates this is a wine that appeals to various palates while maintaining technical excellence.

A cellar release means the winery has held this wine back from its original vintage release date, allowing it additional time to develop complexity and integration before market release. This practice demonstrates the producer's confidence in the wine's quality and their commitment to releasing it at optimal drinking condition. The extra cellaring time has likely softened the tannins and allowed the blackcurrant, allspice, and cocoa flavours to harmonise beautifully.
