Why do we love this wine?

Premium cab from Coonawarra doesn’t easily come at this price, just so you know. So just feel a little bit special being here, with us and this wine, right now. This is one of those wines that reminds me of the golden era of wine quality-meets-affordability. It’s full-bodied but lithe at the same time - deep and rich, but with poise and purpose. This winery’s put a lot of time, energy and money into making their wines relatable to the current climate of Coonawarra, and we’re reaping the rewards in stacks of quality wine. Bravo.

What is a Black Market deal?

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.

Part of our Women in Wine Collection

We are committed to ALWAYS having wines available that are made by women. In an industry that’s still dominated by men, we believe in celebrating the incredible work women are doing. Here’s to our Women in Wine!

This one has a female winemaker, but because it’s a Black Market wine we’re sworn to secrecy. She’s a deadset legend, though.

Frequently Asked Questions

Coonawarra is Australia's premier region for Cabernet Sauvignon, renowned for its terra rossa soil that produces wines with exceptional structure and longevity. This 2020 vintage represents exceptional value for premium Coonawarra fruit, which typically commands much higher prices due to the region's prestigious reputation. The combination of full-bodied richness with elegant poise reflects the unique terroir that has made Coonawarra the benchmark for Australian Cabernet Sauvignon since the 1960s.

The blackberry notes come from the concentrated Cabernet Sauvignon fruit, intensified by Coonawarra's cool climate which allows for extended ripening periods. Dark chocolate flavours typically emerge from careful oak integration and the wine's natural tannin structure, while the smoky characteristics often develop from French oak barrels and the region's unique soil composition. These flavours will continue to integrate and evolve over the next 5-8 years, with the smoky elements becoming more pronounced as the wine matures.

This describes the hallmark of exceptional Coonawarra Cabernet - the ability to deliver power without heaviness. Full-bodied wines can sometimes feel overwhelming, but this wine achieves balance through careful vineyard management and winemaking that preserves natural acidity. The 'poise' refers to the wine's elegant structure and refined tannins that provide backbone without being aggressive, allowing the rich fruit flavours to shine while maintaining freshness and drinkability.

The 96-point Halliday rating and 95-point Wine Orbit score reflect exceptional winemaking that captures the essence of premium Coonawarra terroir. James Halliday's Special Value Award is particularly significant, as it recognises wines that deliver outstanding quality relative to their price point. These scores indicate a wine with perfect balance, complexity, and aging potential that rivals much more expensive Coonawarra Cabernets, making it a standout vintage for both immediate enjoyment and cellaring.

Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon from quality producers typically peaks between 8-15 years from vintage, meaning this 2020 will be at its best from 2028-2035. The wine's full-bodied structure and high-quality ratings suggest excellent aging potential, with the tannins softening and complex secondary flavours developing over time. However, it's already drinking beautifully now if you prefer more primary fruit character, and the wine's balance means it will reward both early consumption and patient cellaring.
