This is what happens when six generations of winemaking wisdom meets one of the best Coonawarra vintages of ALL TIME. From one of Coonawarra's oldest and most well-established families comes a cabernet sauvignon that's got the whole wine world talking - us included. Distinctive intensity of both varietal and regional character melded with balance and harmony that belies its ability to be enjoyed for decades to come.

Why do we love this wine?

This is a magnificent example of what Coonawarra Cabernet has to offer; deeply varietal, undeniably regional and borderline overwhelming to the senses. Two years in French oak, this is a. barrel-selection aged-release that's built for the long haul. This beauty floods your palate with intense dark berries, dark chocolate, and plum, held together by fine tannins and lingering acid in perfect balance for an extended, lingering finish that tells us that 6 years of ageing is not the end for this powerful display of quality-driven winemaking. Here's what the critics are saying: 97 points from Halliday, with notes about the wine's "profound" character and "swagger." Ken Gargett calls it "really impressive" with "serious power and intensity." We agree with all of this, of course, but we'd go a little further, we'd say this is comfortably in the top 5 cabernets with tried all year - and we try A LOT of cabernet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Coonawarra's famous terra rossa soil - a thin layer of red clay over limestone - creates perfect drainage while retaining essential moisture for Cabernet Sauvignon vines. This unique geological combination, paired with the region's cool maritime climate, allows the grapes to develop intense varietal character while maintaining natural acidity. The limestone subsoil also contributes to the wine's distinctive mineral backbone and exceptional ageing potential.

French oak barrels impart subtle vanilla and spice notes while allowing controlled micro-oxygenation that softens tannins and integrates flavours. The extended barrel ageing develops complex secondary characteristics like cedar, tobacco, and leather notes that complement the wine's dark fruit core. This careful oak treatment enhances structure without overwhelming the wine's regional character, creating the foundation for decades of cellar development.

With its powerful tannin structure, balanced acidity, and concentrated fruit, this wine is built for extended cellaring of 15-20 years or more. The description notes that even after 6 years of ageing, this is 'not the end' for this wine's development. Premium Coonawarra Cabernets like this often reach their peak between 10-15 years, then can maintain excellence for another decade with proper storage.

This term indicates the winemaker selected only the finest barrels from their cellar for this release, representing the cream of their production. Aged-release means the wine has been held back beyond typical release schedules, allowing additional bottle development that creates more complex tertiary flavours. This practice is reserved for exceptional vintages where the winemaker believes extended ageing will significantly enhance the wine's quality and drinking experience.

The remarkable consistency across multiple critics (97-98 points from top reviewers) reflects this wine's exceptional balance of power and finesse. Critics recognise the wine's 'profound character' and 'serious intensity' while appreciating how well-integrated the elements are - the dark fruit, chocolate notes, and fine tannins work in harmony rather than competing. This level of critical consensus typically indicates a wine that perfectly expresses both its variety and region at the highest quality level.
