Why do we love this wine?

This producer is an all-round King Valley favourite of ours. The wine is a wonderfully medium bodied drop with complexity from 17 months in a mix of American and French oak. It has all of the oak-derived structure, vanilla and chocolate you could want, whilst the cabernet sauvignon brings bramble, blackcurrants and hints of thyme and bay leaf. Pop the oven on and get that lamb roasting cause this wine is sure gonna need something to pair with.

What is a Black Market deal?

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.

Frequently Asked Questions

King Valley's elevation and cool climate create perfect conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, allowing the grapes to develop complex flavours whilst maintaining natural acidity. The region's diverse microclimates and well-draining soils contribute to the wine's characteristic bramble and blackcurrant notes. This particular 2018 vintage showcases the valley's ability to produce medium-bodied wines with excellent structure and aging potential.

The combination of American and French oak barrels creates a sophisticated flavour profile that balances power with elegance. American oak contributes vanilla sweetness and bold structure, whilst French oak adds subtle spice and refined tannins. This dual-oak approach allows the wine's natural blackcurrant and bramble characteristics to shine through whilst gaining complexity from cedar and chocolate notes that develop during the extended maturation period.

The 94-point rating reflects the wine's exceptional balance between fruit concentration and oak integration, showcasing textbook Cabernet Sauvignon characteristics. The complex interplay of bramble fruits, herbs like thyme and bay leaf, and well-integrated oak demonstrates masterful winemaking. Such high scores typically indicate a wine that expresses its varietal character beautifully whilst showing the terroir influence of King Valley's unique growing conditions.

The wine's medium body and savoury herb notes make it perfect for roasted lamb, as the tannins complement the meat's richness whilst the thyme and bay leaf flavours create harmonious pairing. The oak-derived structure also pairs beautifully with aged cheeses, grilled beef, or hearty stews. The allspice and cedar notes make it particularly suited to dishes with Mediterranean herbs or slow-cooked preparations that echo the wine's complexity.

With its excellent structure from 17 months of oak aging and 94-point rating, this wine has strong cellaring potential of 8-12 years from vintage. The tannin backbone and balanced acidity will allow the wine to develop greater complexity over time, with the oak integration becoming more seamless. Peak drinking is likely between 2024-2030, though it's already showing beautifully now for those who prefer younger, more vibrant fruit expression.
